If it was every weekend or something like that, I'd be right with you in that one, and I'd be calling the police too, but for 3-4 times a year, that's not really that bad at all to be honest. I think in this instance you might just have to grin and bear it.

If you can hear the bass only ever so slightly, then maybe they are aware of keeping the noise down best they can?

Thank your lucky stars it isn't 3-4 times a week (as many people have to put up with)...

If you don't want to speak to them, why not drop a friendly note through saying that you don't have a problem with the music as such, but if they could turn the bass down after midnight you'd really appreciate it as it carries so much more than any other sound.

Be polite, they're pretty good neighbours if this is the only issue!

One party every three to four months so three or four times a year ?

I had a similar situation when I had two teachers living next door -TBH it was not a huge issue as it was as infrequent as yours.

I was however on good terms with them so would have spoken to them rather than call the police (no wonder they aren't very friendly to you).

agreed - I don't think a party where you can faintly hear the bass noise until 2am, 3 or 4 times a year, is bad at all! If its really bothering you speak to your neighbours - I'm not surprised the police wouldn't come out to be honest.

We used to have this at least 3 times a week. The sound team at our council actually respond to calls after 7 p.m. not 11, which is especially handy if you work shifts like my OH. The first thing the team asked me is, "Have you been around to ask them to turn it down?"

It wouldn't really bother me 3-4 times a year, and if you have a real problem you need to see them face to face. They might be completely amicable, or they might be like our neighbours and slam the door in your face.

I have to say though, if you are seriously trying to file complaints without speaking to them first, how do they know you can hear it?? Some houses are totally soundproofed, which they might have moved out from, some are not so. They might think there isn't a problem.

My parents got a complaint filed against them because apparently their dryer was too loud. The thing that annoyed them most wasn't the complaint, it was the fact that their next door neighbours were too cowardly to say something and they didn't have the chance to rectify it.
  • I hear what you're saying and I've let it go for about a year now.
I was just asking if there's anything sensible I can do.
Obviously, I know a lot of people get it worse.

More specifically you've let it go for four nights. And there is something sensible - get earplugs.

Sensible? Pop round about midnight while they're having a party and politely ask them to turn it down a bit.

You do realise that this isn't actually a problem, don't you? Phoning the police? Dear God, why don't you just get your Mum round to sort it for you?
  • Sound war!!! That is what I would do! Invest in a Bang and Olufsen sound system or anything else just as good. Have any song by Aphex Twin cued up or have Mike Oldfield's 'Amarok' at full blast!

That should do it... it may send your pets (if you have any) mental though! LOL!

We used to have parties like this but only a few times a year, the neighbours were very patient with us, we were young, and would only come round if it got late and too loud.
A polite knock from them saying its late and loud, something you often don't realise mid party, and we would always turn it down.
Many times a drink would be offered and they would stay for a bit.
Just pop round when its going on you might be surprised by how reasonable they are.
I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.
