Noisy Neighbours

Ever since the house next door was let out to a group of 'young professionals' we've had to put up with loud, late parties every 3 to 4 months.

The music isn't that loud exactly. But because we live in a quiet area, you can hear the bass ever so faintly while trying to sleep.

This is all happening until about 2am in the morning and usually on a Sunday evening, so I'm ruined for work on Monday morning due to lack of sleep.

I haven't gone round to complain to them. Instead my girlfriend phones the police who said "It's domestic" and told her to phone the council. She phoned the council who are only open 9-5 Monday to Friday.

Have spoken to some of the tenants in passing and they've not been very friendly.

Not sure how to resolve this problem really.
Any advice?

Environmental health, anti social task force. If theres loud music going on after 11pm the police should be able to visit the address to tell them to turn it down.

One party every three to four months so three or four times a year ?

I had a similar situation when I had two teachers living next door -TBH it was not a huge issue as it was as infrequent as yours.

I was however on good terms with them so would have spoken to them rather than call the police (no wonder they aren't very friendly to you).

  • Earplugs?

A party every 3-4 months where you can faintly hear the music isn't too bad IMO, but then I'm a good sleeper.

Three/four times a year?! That's nothing. If they were doing it twice a week then you'd have cause to complain. But really this is nothing that a pair of earplugs, kept in your bedside cabinet, would solve.

Every 3-4 months isn't a lot but even faint thump thump thump of the bass would get on my nerves.

My brother used to have his bass on all the time and even on a low volume, the noise is rather annoying after a while.

Before you do anything else, get yourself some good earplugs and see if that makes any difference.

I agree, 4 parties a year wouldn't bother me at all.

I do think that calling the police was a bit drastic.

Do you ever have parties at your house?

You have little recourse really. If you call the noise hotline at the council and formally complain you will have to legally declare that you've had problems with your neighbours. May not seem like a big issue now but it could be a deal breaker if the time came.

If you do call them they will do a subjective noise test themselves. If they don't feel the noise is sufficiently loud they won't take any action and you'll be left with a black mark on your house sale.

I think you'll just have to live with it.

Just be thankful you don't live right next to them.

I'm struggling to see the problem. Speak to them, ask them to turn the bass down, personally I would just put up with it as it's only a few times a year. Clearly you live in a better area than me, I struggle to sleep if there isn't the usual sound of screaming, music and the police helicopter overhead :rotfl:.

Take a bottle or 2 round and enjoy the fun and call in sick on the monday?!

seriously though - if you want to live somewhere that you cant hear next doors very faint music every blue-moon, I suggest that you and your girlfriend buy a detached house.

Definately speak to them... how will they know that it is disturbing you if all you can hear is a faint bass line!? I'd be a bit upset if the police just turned up at my house without any sort of hint from the neighbours that they wanted the music turned down.
