update: funnily enough, the link was here on MSE:
"It may be a criminal offense
Guidance we've had from Trading Standards says ignoring a sticker may be a criminal offense under the Consumer Protection From Unfair Trading Regulations 2008. While it's not been tested in court, a QC agrees with this so we've added it to our sign. If they knock when they shouldn't, there can be no argument."

So until then there is no legal standing for these signs and can be ignored.0 -
So until then there is no legal standing for these signs and can be ignored. You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'0

I have exactly the same problem.
I have a sign clearly displayed on my front door saying "NO COLD CALLING", "NO CANVASSERS", and "NO SALES".
I have had people as well as ADT, people selling gold jewellery, people saying about loft insulation and cavity walling.
What the fcuk are you supposed to do if you have these signs up and people still knock??
Its bloody rude for these people to ignore these signs; mind you someone told me you can phone the police and report it.0 -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault
"An assault is carried out by a threat of bodily harm coupled with an apparent, present ability to cause the harm."
I don't think a light spray of water counts as bodily harm
The definition the police use is as follows:Any act, which intentionally or recklessly, causes another person to apprehend immediate and unlawful personal violence.
I doubt it has ever been tested, but if you were to spray water over someone, they could possibly twist that definition to fit the circumstances, especially if you were behaving in an agitated/aggressive manner.0 -
Good grief, what has this island come to represent if a little motion activated water sprinkler spraying an unwanted visitor (trespasser /harasser) with that highly dangerous substance called water when they have activated it themselves by their unwanted and possibly unlawful, presence, heralds a criminal assault on them by the property owner?
How on earth is that able to be twisted into the property owner behaving in an "agitated/aggressive manner"?0 -

:eek:So your saying its OK for an uninvited caller to ignore what the owner of the property has clearly stated, and for the caller to get aggresive and agitated when the owner gets aggresive and agitated when the numpty caller ignores what they are informed of in a pleasant manner in the 1st place:mad:
SORRY, but we have rights too, one of which is to protect our property from those who trespass, AND when the callers wont go away from mine, after being told they are unwanted, they are informed they are NOW tresspassing and I then have a right to protect my property, so be aware I WILL!
These !!!!!!'s are nothing but BULLY BOYS, and I dont like bully boys no matter who they try to bully, here, on my property, or on someone elses:mad:Signature removed0 -
If it was trespassing how would the postie deliver your mail?
How about if you're not expecting anyone to be knocking at the door, don't answer it.
Firstly, the postman has an implied license under ECL, however you can remove this "implied licence" from people by either asking them to leave your property, or by putting up something such as a "no cold callers" sign. If they then choose to ignore your wishes and remain on your property, then they are committing trespass.
Secondly, not answering the door may be a perfectly suitable option for you, but if these cold-callers know you're about, more often than not they'll try the bell a couple of times. All well and good for some, but if my son's asleep and someone's ringing the doorbell and waking him up, whether I answer the door or not, I'm still going to be royally peed off that they've ignored the sign.0 -
That's on a scale of creepy/10 though. Normally it's a polite no thank you, close the door and they move on to the next house. If they stuck around then that means they're targeting you for some other reason i.e trying to gain entry.
Irrelevant though. They shouldn't be disturbing me in the first place. I have two young children, I'm often busy with them/housework. Not sure why I should be inconvenienced because they're inconsiderate gits.0 -
Probably best to add that part to your sign
My sign says:NO COLD CALLERS.
This means no
- Sales canvassers (double glazing, gas, electricity, cleaning supplies or otherwise)
- Preachers (I don't need salvation, it's too late, move on)
- Photographers (I have my own camera and a white sheet, job done)
- Police (I didn't do it, honest)
HOWEVER
Feel free to knock if you are
- The postie (I like you, you're ok)
- A courier (No, really, knock the door, stop leaving cards when I'm home!)
- A window cleaner prepared to tackle this place for a good price)
- Friends and family (if I like you)
- People bringing me large amounts of money (I'll even make you a cuppa!)
- A milkman
I don't think I should have to point out that I have two young children. I've told them I'm not interested via the sign, they should respect that.0
