Just back from collecting an online order delivered to my M&S, so dropped into Homebase while I was at the shopping centre.

Anyhow, saw they were selling bamboo at half-price plus another 15% off so for £12.75 now have a good sized Arrow bamboo Pseudosasa japonica. As these are 'running' bamboo, I'm going to experiment and plant in a copper-impregnated root container they were showing on Beechgrove Garden. Supposedly the fabric will allow water through, but the copper will kill root tips
my poor mum had a fall this morning.

Sorry to hear that, as you say just as well you visited and could get her to hospital

Hopefully, it'll look worse than it is and she'll be on the mend very soon.

I've been there with this and 'active' parent. My Dad ended up in casualty when he fell, running after a bus around the age of 89. (I remember he'd just given up his bike!) It looked horrible, but the injuries were largely superficial.

    Another virtual hug here. smiley-hug005.gif

Alfie Hugs for you and your mum, you both must have had a dreadful fright. Hopefully a bit of TLC will see her soon on the mend.

LIR The garden is yours and you should do as you wishes within it. Prepping for winter when the weather is goo sounds like a sensible plan to me and I am sure the gentleman working in your garden would agree.

IHS Your garden is so beautiful and filled with treasures, I really do find it inspiring :D

Dave I bought new shears the other day and hubby said "Let me guess, a Dave recommendation?" :rotfl:

CTC Your bacon sounds amazing and I don't blame you for holding out for the next portion of home grown :)

I have had a disastrous weekend and am now trying to pretend it didn't happen! All safe and well if a little delicate ;)

Hope your mum has a speedy recovery.

Lovely day today & only rained once. OH getting good on the digger. We had a shot of one years ago & he did a fair bit of drainage stuff, so he's getting back in the swing of it. Bit delicate until we found the main electric cable again...

I've been listing on the bay ( free listing until Mon midnight) as still a bit useless on heavy outdoor stuff, still feel as if I've been a few rounds with Mike Tyson & look like someone's sandpapered my belly & back such is the rash....too much detail I know.

I thought of you today Rummer. I remember you wondered what to do with blackcurrants - don't we all. You can only hide them in the freezer for so long. Well, you can make coulis & freeze that with them, any berry. Boil them with just a little sugar & a little water, sieve, and bottle or freeze to keep longer. Use over ice cream or swirled in yoghurt for an easy dessert - very healthy don't ya know? Or use with hot water for a drink like syrup.

Having shingles is horrible. I hope you soon see an improvement, choille. :)

Ha, we found the main electricity cable too! I was absent when it happened and DW forgot that I'd worked out where it would be....:o

Luckily, only the plastic outer sheath was damaged, not the cable, so I wrapped it in plumber's Denso tape, but I noticed there was mud inside the sheath, so either someone hit the same place before, or there's another break somewhere else.

We are lucky here. The others have overhead lines for power and telephone, but both come underground to us, which means no poles and cables in the view. :D

Very dark and piddling down, so it can only improve today. I pity those on holiday, though they got 2 out of 3 decent days here.

Just a little update from me...

Had a hybrid hen go broody, we set her with half a dozen eggs. One hatched but got stuck in the membrane because she kicked it out of the nest, so we took it away from her and warmed it up indoors. Consequently, I went and bought four day-olds (bantams) to keep it company in the brooder. So now we have 5 chicks all of the same age. None of the other eggs even pipped, a couple had died earlier, but I'm not at the stage where I'm comfortable breaking them open to see what went wrong.

So the 5 chicks (one home hatched, three Pekin bantams and a Sabelpoot) all get along like a house on fire, although DH thinks I may have chosen all boys  which would be dreadful! Next door-but-one has Pekin boys and they're not *too* noisy, but I will want some sound-proofed quarters for them for the winter. Unless the colours are all so pretty I want to keep them.

It would appear I am gravitating towards having a little breeding flock of Pekins... oh dear oh dear oh dear :rotfl:utterly devastated of course.

Hugs to everyone especially Choille and Alfie's mum.
