Just had a down pour here too. Looking at the work in the north garden water table is creeping higher and higher. Have to confess I am very worried.

Now, rain doesn't worry me at all. August IS a high rain fall month. But people are kicking cracks in earth and saying its dry, but the cracks I here are just big cracks, not the horrific ones we are used to having and the cake is far too full. We simply cannot go into autumn like this.
I pray its a cold winter, not a wet one this year. :(

  • LIR.. we are due a cold hard winter... as it was soooo mild last year...

    still piddling it down here...

thinking about getting a supply of sandbags.. to go alongside the stream/pig run to see if that will stop the stream over flowing into part of the pig run, when the rain is really bad..

    :j:j:j I achieved loads :j:j:j

    In the back garden I…….
    • Weeded the pots and the beds
    • Moved a few plants around
    • Tamed the giant spiky mean thing that grows in from the neighbours garden (although it fought hard :rotfl:)
    • Cut the grass
    • Trimmed the edges
    • Weeded the patio and the paths
    • Cut back part of the tree that was getting a bit unruly
    • Sprayed the front path
    • Removed the rusty BBQ and other misplaced items
The back garden now looks smart and well tended :). However my planting plans did not work out the way I wanted them too :( The shaded bed is ok and I moved a few things to improve the layout however there are gaps and I need to think long and hard about what to plant there.

Sadly the sunny border has been a bit of a disaster :( The lavender was obstructing the other things so I have moved them into the pots which were lying empty after unsuccessful lettuce growing. It really improves the look of the patio so that is a plus. Now however I have an almost empty bed with only two hebes and a hibiscus. All the other things either did not grow or were eaten by slugs.

Also need to think of a way to make the patio look beautiful. It is a large rectangular piece of concrete which then becomes uneven grey slabs so it is all very grey. The rest of the garden is a step down so along the edge of the patio I have pots filled with lavender. I think we might paint the back of the house white to brighten the area up and look at adding more pots?? Not sure, think I am going to have to google!

    Herb garden

Gardener is not committed to my plan. He's left me over night to 'think about it' ( he looked at me sternly)

    So far we have this

At this end, ( above) the plan is for the bed on the right to me three planks high, and for the bed in the middle to be three planks high, then have a middle section two planks high.

This end, the same, three on the bottom sections, two on the mid sections, then a little one bed on the top of the tower.

Gardener tentatively suggests its all a bit imposing and cluttered. And if we just had one garden I might agree, but its one area in a bigger garden, the top bit is where I look out when cooking. I can see over it to the roses and pears. If we lower it I don't see anything else.

Imposing, or interesting nooks? The seating bit between is ample, more than, there is still room for pots, and paths all the way round the beds.

Also, thinking further forward, the three plank bottom tier is 18 inch high. I chose that height because its the height of standard seating. We can plonk a plank in a few places later if we want more spots to sit and take coffee while smelling herbs, or just sit on and crush the more robust herbs.

It will of course be painted the inevitable 'rates greyeen' too. Which will 'lose' a lot of the impact.
