Happy birthday!
What did you do in the end today?
Edit: cross posted, glad it was a chill day0 -
Happy Birthday, CTC. Just made it in time!
All good here. It's been frantic up to the end of term. I'm actually looking forward to the holidays with no school or term time activities scheduled.
Still not in the house. It's the battle to get the tradespeople back. I'm going to have to get heavy next week, threatening to terminate contracts if they don't complete.
I'm going to have a tootle back in time now and see how Dave's doing with his build
One fox attack has led to a loss of precious Ixworths, though I should still have enough to breed from next season.0 -

Oh, not so bad. There was a reasonably significant power cut which took out also the back up power and also comes with banks impacting on commerce of some stores ( I couldn't get the type of cruddy milk replacer I've grown used to for example, or petrol, but we have almost half a tank) I'm cooking a bit this week for people staying at the end of the week and because I 'm not feeling up to big shops planning my least favourite activity twice this week. Instead, I couldn't even get what I needed for today. Grrrr.
Still, its really not that bed. If the worst is you cannot get milk. Its not a bad life, right?
We're fine. Loss of phone is a pain, but the phones were a pain. They were an extra long range but phone that theoretically should cover me I. The garden and beyond. Instead doesn't even reach the kitchen properly.
Only other option with very long range seems to be something with horrific , horrific price tag.
I'd ideal like something that could reach out into the yard, or even the veg plot, so I can get out and work from home not just house if I want to, and not rely on mobile.0 -

Dave's doing OK, but the build is less ambitious now. I will try to put a plan up here some time.
We have gone with a local chap who was known to the family prior to moving here. He isn't really a builder, but a carpenter with most of the other knowledge/skills. Being a bit of a one man band, he will be slower than a building firm, but he cares about the job and consults frequently, so we don't mind that.
We know electricians & plumbers/heating engineers, plasterers etc, so in theory, tying in the other skills isn't hard, but as you know, it's availability that can be problematic.
Anyway, so far, we've changed the garage to a pitched roof and run one side of it right over the old perspex-roofed lean- to utility behind. That's been partially re-built from the waist up, as the floor and lower walls were all fine. Windows stolen from the garage and kitchen will complete that, and I'll add insulation and an inner skin to make it reasonably warm. It will only be accessible from outside, so on paper it's a boiler room, but in reality it'll make a damn good office and work room. Compromises!
Half the garage will eventually become an en-suite, but that's the last job on our list, though it could be a winter one too.
For the rest of this year, we want to get rid of the flat roof over the kitchen frontage and change it to a gable, rebuilding the chimney above roof level at the same time. This means whipping out a huge steel beam and replacing it with another. It's quite a big job, which we cant begin until late August.....our man has other work now! Sound familiar?
Sorry to hear about the Ixworths. Being rare, it's good you have enough to rebuild stocks, but still not nice.0 -
