Hope you are recovering Better Days.

Rhiwfield The midgies can go on into October - hope not though. August seems to be the worst month. If there's a breeze or it's hoy they don't tend to appear.

    Happy birthday CTC.:beer::bdaycake:

It's been hot here too, too hot really, but mustn't grumble.

Too hot here to do much indoors or out, however I was pushed too far today by the unruly ivy growing up our home and I had to hack great lumps of it off before it took over some windows. Pretty as it may look it is a nightmare to keep in order and it has quite a grip

We enjoyed more raspberries from the garden today, I really love walking barefoot into the garden first thing in the morning to eat them straight from the plant :D. I also have big plans for our mint over the next few days. The potatoes may also be ready although it looks as if our shallots have not taken this year which is disappointing as they are one of our favourite crops.

When do we pull up our spring planted garlic? Do we wait until the foliage dies back?

Oh and another wee question, can anyone recommend a good quality pair of shears that could tackle a hedge but are not too heavy? Our old reliables are beyond saving and the newer ones I bought a couple of years ago are too heavy and even after sharpening are rubbish. Cutting our hedge by hand is one of my secret pleasures :o

At least I think it's these, doesn't say a brand name and they don't look quite the same as mine but near as damn it - I've had mine more than 10 years so they've probably changed the colour of the handles by now!

They are so easy to use, I first discovered them at a client's garden, they were her own, but I borrowed them on her recommendation and I immediately bought some.

It says they're for topiary (she had loads and liked to clip regularly!) but they can handle any species of hedge - as long as it's just fresh growth that's being trimmed... I have used some heavier duty shears and electric/petrol versions I can hardly lift past shoulder height and they will 'chop' larger branches but really should have used secateurs for that!

    HTH!

We had full sun again, but the breeze was enough to make it bearable, so we put the steel sheets on the wood shed roof. They aren't too bad now they're on, but I had to stagger them to accommodate the weird shape. Anyway, the point is, any rain next week won't go inside now. :D

I'm not looking forward to doing the other wood shed roof!

Not much else to report, except a blackbird has attacked the truss of toms I was preparing for next weeks Show!

    CTC, belated happy birthday!

DD1 arrived home yesterday, in a fairly bad state so we brought her over here for some monitored relaxation and to rehydrate. Heat, exhaustion and some fairly bad feet/calves legacies of the 4 days march :(.

I suspect it will be an A&E trip this morning now that the swellings are more localised, one foot has either a blister infection or an allergic bite reaction that may need antiobitics and possibly has some underlying structural problem.

Got busy with the log splitter and have got most of the freebie load done. Back holding up...just :o. The GH wood is now under 10% moisture, so two weeks of heat wave was enough to dry it out from 30%-40% :j

I'm struck at the price of potatoes in the shops and the savings we're making by GYO. I see Tesco are warning that food will take more of the family budget due to world price increases :(

No it's a pet blackbird which follows us around everywhere here. It was bouncing along in front of the mower yesterday, just for the hell of it!

He's very friendly, and between him and the moles, it's no wonder our worm count is poor. :(
