Dry and bright with me so am cracking on with garden, expecting rain overnight.
East facing beds now underway and trench dug to place perforated pipe to dump rain water into soak-away.
Post holes to take pergola over steps dug (visible on left). Everything caked in mud, so tools, steps, patio will need jet washing once done.0 -
Looking good spoke!0

That is looking really good! It will be amazing when everything has taken hold and filled out
What are you going to do with the open bricks? I love seeing plants grown in the holes and that would add even more interest to the garden.
Dry yet a bit chilly here today. I am currently whizzing through my chores so that I can get outside and dig!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Ferret Our local school often has small holders in to speak to the children about growing crops or raising animals and they send leaflets home to the parents
We have order from a few as it made us aware of local suppliers we would probably not have heard otherwise. Another good turn is to provide something for a school fundraiser as then your details are highlighted to everyone and you are being kind by helping the school.
Oh and if you have the right kind of insurance/setup you can always have them over to visit!
Oh what good ideas, thanks Rummer! We aren't quite set up here yet for the general public, still a bit of a building site, but of course I can go to them in the mean time. I could hatch some babies or even take a bigger animal, the sheep and goats are very friendly! We have a primary school just a stones throw away.
I actually offered a stay in my holiday cottage in a dog charity auction, hasn't generated much extra interest but it was a nice thing to do and raised lots of money at very little cost to me. Hadn't thought of doing the same with farm things
Right that's the second wash load of the day spinning, I love being able to hang everything out and it's dry in no time. Just as well I am SO behind with laundry ATM0 -

My neighbours do farm visits with the local school. They do it in a field away from the farm yard in the main because of the obvious dangers of a working farmyard, particularly at milking time, which is when's he kids tend to be collected.
They see it as an opportunity to introduce organic concepts to a new generation of purchasers, discuss things like country law, using foot paths safely and fairly ...all the kind of issues we chat about but how they impact on bigger farm more, As well as give something back. As organic farmers their ( our ) hedgerows are pretty nice habitats.
Its sweet to see the kids having a good time. I often suggest they introduce the concept of private property when it comes to collection though, instead of parking on the road, as would be perfectly fine, and sensible, the parents try and get as close as possible and so often park in our drive ( sort of ok) and our farm yard ( not ok) and even the horse yard ( definitely not ok).0 -

No west sun, on clay......seems doomed.
I would gladly do a moss one but I think its too sunny for that. I might try planting a patch of moss actually and see how it copes.
Chamomile lawns look good and so do moss gardens. Lots of nice images if you google for one of them + images.
The thought of both has crossed my mind, before getting stubbornly back into "I've decided it will be a veg. garden and so it darn will be" mode again:rotfl:0 -
Ferret Our local nursery has eggs that the children watch hatch and see them grow as chicks. The children love it
Well hubby and I are in from the garden and we achieved loads :j The sunny bed I completely cleared and the new plants are in!!! While I was doing that hubby cleared the remaining paths and around the back of the shed.
Oh it also looks as if the shed may be saveable with a bit of DIY. We are planning to remove it long term however in the short time our resources would be better placed elsewhereTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Grrr! Just discovered that the Electric Hen I bought in February from eBay as an ex-display model isn't working. I've only just taken it out of it's box to brood chicks....0

Just been looking out at the garden and I am so pleased with the layout of the sunny bed, it just looks so good compared to how it looked with raspberries in it. We will miss the fresh raspberries this year however we will have planted new canes for next year once we decide where they are going.
There is just so much to be done in the garden and it can feel overwhelming at times however doing a wee bit everyday is making it feel more manageable. I have decided my priorities are:- Clear up and plant the shady bed
- Plant the flower seeds
- Tidy the greenhouse
- Dig the vegetable beds
- Organise the bottom of the back garden
That is the order that I am going to do things in so that I don't loose focus! There are other things to be done however I can think about them when these are done.
LIR I love the sound of a chamomile lawn, if that is too much of an undertaking could you plant it as part of a path?
Dave For the 100th timeand this time I will write it down, how and when is the best time to get rid of a large patch of nettles?

remember its the most daunting time of year really. Every thing to be done and the belief we must do it all- Clear up and plant the shady bed

I'm spraying this year.. Its just got to be got under control.
The lawn was always meant to form path/ part of path across front of the house. Relatively dog free. We could put stone paving stones in for minimising traffic though I love the idea of just lawn, it might not be fair to expect lawn to cope.
It also doesn't need mowing. It would mean I'd never have to get the mower round there again.:j
