Dave - any luck with the peas? My standard Meteor have germinated but the treated GS have done burger all?
I'll have a look tomorrow. They went in about a week ago in cell pots in the polytunnel. No sign of movement yesterday.....
It didn't rain here until 2pm, so despite having to see the nurse mid-morning, we got more trees in. Clearing our tree nursery bed is looking do-able at last.
Nurse had been planting apple trees, so we got talking and I didn't even notice her taking the samples. I'm afraid I had 2 hours sleep in the afternoon.Perhaps she took too much! :rotfl:
Panto photos have just reached me. I'll have a look later & maybe post a few. How did your DH's panto go, Better Days?
Ours raised £1700, a new record.0 -
Houses still need to be priced keenly around here, but perhaps less so when it comes to properties with more than just a big garden, simply because there aren't many about.
Here's a wee do-er upper that caught my eye, though not even a hint of a price. It's in a lovely area of rolling scenery and the two nearest villages are very desirable. Easy commute too.....

Been reading the brochures on it - offers look to be over £300,000.
Love the style. I'd renovate it.
Spent the day prepping the ground to put up a polytunnel. So knackered I fell asleep on the sofa when I came in, muddy overalls an all. Just in time, the rain belted down and has been ever since.
Does anyone grow citrus fruit in their polytunnel?0 -
Reni Redzepi scrubs whole celariac and then cooks in liquid butter until cooked through. http://ind.pn/MCQEs2
If it were not for the butter...............
That makes me wonder if a whole celeriac could be pr1cked & microwaved until cooked through. I know this can be done with a swede (takes about 20 minutes I think), although it does tend to ooze a bit. Just scoop out the middle when cooked.
Cottage Economy, a polytunnel is definitely on my list of 'wants' when we eventually get our daydream place. What else are you hoping to grow?? And what size polytunnel have you gone for??
Dave, hope the afternoon snooze did you some good.'A watched potato will never chit'...0 -
Pink - only a 3m wide by 4m long. I say only because it sounded massive when hubby bought is for me, but once you peg out the space it doesn't seem like much after all. I'm going to rig up some shelves inside too I think. I was going to wait until our dream home to have one, but decided to just go for it and do it now.
I'm definitely growing tomatoes, peppers and aubergines. Soft fruit, particularly gooseberries, and a citrus if I can get a tree on dwarfing stock and get it to stay small, probably planted in the very centre of the tunnel. I have kiwi in the conservatory but it is not doing too well and needs a permanent home.
I'm hoping I can get some other interesting fruits to grow under cover in the tunnel.0 -

£300k I could believe, but strangely, there's two 'chocolate box' houses also just on the market in the same small area. One of those is well under that figure, but hasn't much garden land.
We have some olive trees and figs in our tunnel, but only the latter produce fruit.....occasionally. However, we're virtually self-sufficient in peppers and green stuff, like lettuce, mizuna, rocket etc.0 -
Just to let you know that Home Bargains have lots of lovely plants in at the moment
I got a Bleeding Heart in really good condition for less than £2 :j I have wanted one for a while and have a spot in the garden that I think will suit it perfectly, the flowers are so beautiful and unusual.
Today the weather was wet, windy and freezing :eek:Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Thanks, but...there's no Home Bargains within 100 miles of me according to their store locator.
I spotted a Cornus 'Midwinter Fire' in Morrisons on Monday, except that neither it, nor the picture on the packet, were what it claimed to be.
Much better was a potentilla 'Abbotswood' in Lidl for £1.79, although they played safe and didn't name it! :rotfl:
Edit: Speaking of lettuce, as I was earlier, the 'Black Seeded Simpson' I planted in the autumn looked very wussy to start with, but it came through winter better than the others and it's really nice now.0 -
morning all,
well after a horrible wet, rainy afternoon yesterday, the weather looks bright and sunny this morning...
so yep a day off work to do more stuff in the greenhouse, and around the house..
still cant find those flipping seeds.. so will have to re-order/buy some of them..as I cant wait much longer, as I really do want to sow stuff to sell.....
right off to have a cuppa and some toastWork to live= not live to work0 -
Just catching up quickly.....
Weather beautiful here today, after a rainy/blustery end to Thursday - shame we have too much else to do inside on the build to concentrate any efforts on the outside
Went down to visit my dad yesterday - he spent the whole time sleeping and seemed very comfortable. Looks as though he may be discharged next week - am amazed his recovery from the stroke has been so swiftObviously with the Vascular Dementia he's never going to be totally recovered and seeing him lying there peacefully you could be forgiven for forgetting there's anything wrong in that department, but hey-ho......life is so ruddy cruel though
Thanks again guys for all your kind wishes xxx
On a brighter note, our new windows for the front elevation are due to be fitted next week (starting Tuesday), so hope the good weather continues. The joinery co just emailed me some pics and they look fab, all painted and ready to go!
Prior to that DH needs to finish plastering one room and get the sub floor laid, so a busy weekend ahead for him......I'll be painting where possible and trying to find space to store the windows when they get delivered on Monday.....also need to re-organise and de-clutter the shed - why are sheds never big enough, despite always buying one larger than you think you require? DH really needs to get a workshop or somewhere specifically for tools, he has soooo many
A cottage in our village is up for auction today - with a guide of £200k. It was last sold in 2006 for £245k, but has been tenanted for a while and is apparently in a bit of a state. Pretty little thatched place though - will be interesting to see what it achieves....if it sells.
Love to all and make the most of the Spring sunshineMortgage-free for fourteen years!
