Rhiwie, its always nice reading your posts,
got to buy another pig arc this week, we made a shelter for the boar our of reclaimed stuff at its been great, no floor, just loads of straw etc, but with all this rain.. and it is not soaking away etc... its just not good enough now....
we are on the count down now... will be picking our bacon up at the end of the week.... so it will be a bacon fest over the weekend in our house...lol...
probably a reason why not but...;)
why dont you use that brick built building as a house [ cost of new ark may be close to a quick roof on the building ??] run a fence round that area and at least all piggies will be dry and give the bog a chance to drain a bit ? bogletts will prob stay more in building and less wear and tear on the land.... youde have to seperate big lad from boglets tho...;)0 -
we are down to 2 boglets now....
Hubby wants to put some loose boxes on the concrete base, that was the battery hen foundations...
bought the arc today for 'paul the pig' so should be with us by the end of the week, or the early part of next week..
With the 2 boglins that are left we have one girl, and the black and white one, which is the bloody stubbon one lol... we might keep the girl, so that means we would potentially have 3 breeding sows...
the run where they are now, hopefully in the next few weeks will be empty of pigs, an can rest for a while.. we will also move the fence and gate back a bit... and then put the big girls in thereWork to live= not live to work0 -

i meant the brick building further down track... the one i disapeared in being nosey..:D:rotfl:0 -
hello peeps
i feel like im a war refugee... got intermittent power , have to decide what to switch on/ off..:o boiler not working ..again
so no heating or hot water. im boiling pans of water to wash up etc...:rotfl:
do you think someone up there is having a bluddy good laugh at me at the moment...:rotfl:
i went to new house saturday for a bath and had to turn radiator down as too hot ...:o talk about opposites !!
i beat CTC hands down with bells on it re carp....:D
water has receeded here ... for now.
re dredging.. i had a conversation yesterday re this and i said the beaulieu river was yonks ago a narrow mouth from the solent.[ i lived there from 1984 till 2002] they opened up the mouth of the river to accomodate bigger/more yachts etc to the marina not so long ago.
at the back of me was the top end by the village/bridge etc. the height of the silt since this alteration has raised the river floor by 8ft. it doesnt take a genius to work out that water has risen 8ft in effect.. the road/bridge/lake etc all flood now.
exactly the same has happened to the lymington river. they reclaimd the sea in huge area to create a marina.. and it is huge. in the early 1900s no deep keeled boat could get up the then narrow opening of the river. since theyve opened it up the silt has totally raised water levels by many feet. again mass flooding. the thing is they regularly dredge the area in/around the marina but ignore the rest of the river.
common sense here IMO is to dredge the river mouths up to the point of tributaries etc and this will help water from surrounding areas get away faster as at the moment its like hitting a brick wall.
the common thread seems to be they look after anything that brings in an income ... for the suits0 -

What the problem with that, at the moment we will need the space in front of that ( behind the big caravan) to put the other caravan for the boys lol..
Plus potentially once the pigs ha been there a week or two, any surplus water would then run down onto the footpath..
This IS the worst rain we have had, so no one could have forseen how our land would cope with it, BUT now we will factor in this type of weather in future plans for the land.... weather it will help or not, I don't know lol...
Edit..... re trees plants etc... even though we have lots of trees on our land... a lot of them are dead... so will def be making sure we plant trees etc... at regular intevals so we can have some for wood too, and have them to take up surplus rain/waterWork to live= not live to work0 -
CTC
The other thing to look at is the ditches at the top of your land. They are the ones that keep you ground dry, not those at the bottom. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Tomorrow we are without power from 8am till 5pm while they change our poles over, so it'll be an early start for us!
Freezers are packed full and on boost.
I think there will be a fair amount of damage to our fields when the digger returns. The workmen will be taking the cables over the road so perhaps damage to the fence there as well, with burly lads jumping back & forth over it all day.
Still, at least we'll get the old poles......;) What could I do with those? We'll have four, including the old telegraph pole.0 -

:rotfl::rotfl:Another monolithic monopoly!
Although it was Mr Dog who created the problem, they compounded it by behaving badly, though at least they admitted it later.
I've had an ebay supplier on the phone tonight regarding non-delivery of goods. Again, it's taken threats of raising a dispute to get any action. They don't answer their phone or emails, so what do they expect? :mad:0 -
Ras... its hard to explain, but where Alfie said to put the pigs is on the flat, BUT there is a steep bank at the edge of that narrow strip, which below that is a public footpath ( still part of our land)
It used to be where the coal used to be transported down to the local canal on the old dram lines....
Its not all that bad... there are just hot spots which is due to the weather, an the pigs congregating at the gate to get some mulldods ( cuddles and scratches etc)Work to live= not live to work0
