Ixworths are fab, Dave. Really good dual purpose birds. As a pure breed layer, only Sussex lay more prolifically....... If, once they start mating, you need any hatching eggs, Dave, let me know.

I might well take you up on that! It's DW's choice next though. I chose the Fenton Blues.

We have our own 'Ixworth' in Blanche. She was supposed to be a Light Sussex, but had no markings. We took her anyway.....£5. She's proved as good as her 'sisters.'

The joys of living on a bend, lir! :(

Hopefully, now our puddle is gone, the risk of that happening here is very much reduced. I never understood why so many people drove through it at speed, but they did.

....but there's a bit of bad cholesterol:(.....and my weight. :o

    Did I get enough exercise?
I thought "Well, much more than you do, sitting in here, mate!":rotfl:
I've shed 4lbs since I last visited, but did he weigh me?
    Nah! :wall:

He's given me a low dose of statins. I'd grumble, but a couple of people reasonably close to me have had bad medical news in the past week or so, so I'll shut up.:silenced:

Don't do the Statins! Side effects bad, and I think they're just sold by BigPharma to make money, nothing to do with your health. :(

My doc wanted me to take them, but I refuse.

I'm not a doc, so anything I say is just my own take on things. But I would always want folks to question use of statins for themselves.

Eat lots of oily fish and almonds!

Best wishes to you Dave, life does get difficult when we get older! :(

    Hugs!
  • morning all,

with all the flooding etc, it is really important to look forward at ANY potential of flooding, or any type of problem really with land and houses etc....

I wonder how many people had bought smallholdings etc... and found out later, it had flooded about 50 - 60 years previously etc...

Davesnave, I am looking forward to receiving it....

I am soooooo looking forward to the first few days of the proper spring sunshine..... really do need it to lift the old spirit...

but in the mean time a cuppa will have to do...

Um, yeah, big companies exist to make money for their shareholders, which is often you and me, if we have diversified investments, but if I can draw a parallel with, say, Monsanto or Dow, my attitude may become clearer.

When we came here, this smallholding was sick with neglect. Right from the start, I knew that I'd need help from Messrs Monsanto and Dow to sort it out. Whether I 'liked' them was, and remains, irrelevant.

The previous owner here certainly didn't like chemicals. Unfortunately, he was also human, so the weeds won because he couldn't keep up with them. With his unfocused approach, he didn't seem to have time to even do the basic maintenance tasks, which is why his 'hedges' were 20' thick, and more. I have the advantage of not trying to earn a living here, but he had youth on his side. ;)

Now, thanks to limited use of those companies' products, my reliance on them is much reduced and I've learned to do other things which make my working time more effective, but I'm still learning.

Moving on to side effects, those are evident too. There probably aren't any dormice in the garden now, for example. That's maybe bad for dormice, but I've kept the roadside as a habitat for them. Has to be a compromise. Maybe they'll like the new copse areas. I hope so.

The population of dock beetles here is also very different now, and I don't need to count them to know it. I have no idea what eats dock beetles, but something is bound to, so I've had an impact there. It's the same with thistles; bound to affect goldfinches, but at least in that case I can grow other things they eat and supplement with seeds in winter.

    And so it goes on....

In the same way, I'll take this statin for a while (it's a generic) but in a mix of other actions, because I know there are no long term magic bullets. Soon as I think I can dump it, I will. Ive a lot of research to do, just like I had here. :)

This winter shows how regional flooding can be, as we in Mid Devon haven't been affected much so far, but if a place hasn't flooded in the past few years, it's probably unlikely to do so.

That's apart from sudden, surface water flash-flooding, which can affect a huge number of properties.

But there's landslips to consider too. Those will become more frequent the longer this wet weather continues. Even if land doesn't slip in a big way, movement can still happen slowly, leading to subsidence. That's what was going on with the house we rented.

Only a few of the properties we looked at had potential water issues, as we tried to weed them out before looking, but 'free' water is a big draw in these days of meters.

I would love a lake, but I'm fairly convinced I shall never have one here! :(

And I'd love river frontage, a river we could swim in, but at this time of year its a blessed relief noT to worry about flooding. :(

Absolutely LIR - we do have a stream (not a river, so not somewhere we could swim :o) running through our garden, but thankfully the garden sweeps down towards it and as the area closest to the house comprises a level terrace of around forty feet which in turn steps down to the long lawn, I don't think we are in any danger here ;) I remember some houses we considered had streams/rivers extremely close to the property itself......sooo glad we walked away from those :D

Tape the meeting on your mobile phone?

Or even get a digital recorder to tape it - could be useful for making verbal notes about other stuff afterwards. eg list of what I have in the shed! ;) :rotfl:
