My news is all good.

Pete came back today and finished off the levelling, both at our end and up by Mr Dog. He then pulled up 5 dud apple trees, four of them conveniently arranging themselves where we need to join the fields together in a couple of years.
Finally, he pulled out the old fence at the Dog end, ready to replace it, starting tomorrow. :j
Here is the same scene as yesterdays, now minus the hump:
Pete explained why he'd been so slow getting around to this job. It was the digger. He needed to come here when he had it on hire for a week, with someone else paying the day rate for 3 days...... It works out as 'free' for the four days after that if he pays the weekly charge!!!;) Of course, I needed to supply the (red) diesel, but it was only 20 litres.
So, a very cheap job! and I'll have plenty of time to plant my trees if the fencing is done now. Once that's in, we'll be looking after a small flock of lambs that haven't been served by a ram, so they will be up here for a while.0 -

Lord, no! Pete wouldn't hold with this kind of publicity, which is why you never get a clear picture of him.
But in the local area he's known as very fair, hard-working and an all-round good bloke....unless you cross him, that is!
Unfortunately, not everyone in the countryside is like him. Take the farmer across the way with his new fences. No strainers at appropriate intervals. no straining posts at each change of direction, other than the ends and gateways, posts all at four paces, not three. That's the way a contractor does it, because he's paid by the metre. Pete chooses to be paid by the hour and still moves faster!
It's so easy to be caught out. I was caught out with some of that soil we've just moved. I allowed 30 tonnes of it to come here as a favour, on the understanding that a chap with big digger would later do what Pete's just done ....but he didn't.

Eyebrows raising on your behalf re that Nearly Fire. By now I have a motto that is roughly along the lines of "You just never know how many stupid people there are around, but they do seem to form rather a large percentage of the population".
Shame one of the Stoopids nearly caused you such a big problem:eek: Thank goodness all was well. I have another theory in life being that "Someone Somewheres is sometimes on Overtime Duty to protect us from The Stoopids". Sympathies because I've just encountered two more in the course of work I am doing on this house...but at least they couldn't have caused me to have a fire (though they both were assessed as Stoopids to start with and duly did cause problems)...
I've encountered enough of them by now personally (and the problems they have created) that my very first question I ask myself about new people I meet these days is "How intelligent are they?"
Glad all is well that ends well there.0 -
Mild morning here.
More fires on the news. Is it just me or is there a seeming spate of them?0 -

phoebe1989seb good grief, you got my heart rate up just reading about the near miss with the skip. Doesn't bear thinking about what could have happened.:eek::eek: How could some idiot throw a cigarette into a skip next to a thatched building?
Alfie - fingers crossed for you tomorrow - have you still got a pond in your back garden?
Mr BD picked up the steam cleaner today, and he tried it out on the kitchen floor. We have light coloured textured lino which is terrible for trapping the dirt from dog and kitty feet, but there is certainly an improvemnet. Unlike the cleaning pad on the mop which is filthy even after being soaked in bio washing powder
:o:o. The mop can also be used as a handheld so will be good for the kitchen in the new house too.
It's amazing exactly how much one can clean with a good steam cleaner, BD. With a bit of thought you can use it on almost anything.0 -
Well today I took the first step to my new life - I handed my notice in at work
It looks like I'll be moving to Wales mid-January and not April as first intended. I've only just finished unpacking boxes at the flat and now have to repack everything!!!Making magic with fabricLight travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.0 -

I've been having problems at work for a couple of months, and I also don't want to do the end of year accounts in April as I'm always asked to 'adjust'
the figures.
Why wait really? If it doesn't work, it won't be through lack of trying and I can always come back!Making magic with fabricLight travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.0 -
Thanks so much for all the good wishes guys
Fortunately DH and I don't have any heart issues (yet), but nonetheless mine for one was going like the clappers till we got the damned blaze under control
The fumes were pretty nasty though.......
There definitely does seem to be a spate of fires being reported at the mo, yet around Bonfire Night when I was expecting the worst it was all quiet in these 'ere parts
Maggie - do hope your dear MIL makes a full recovery, bless her........I know what it's like as have both parents in a nursing home and FIL passed away in his earlier this year. It's a very stressful, heart wrenching time.....
Dave - pleased to see/hear you have lost your hump :T
Money - I was already feeling pretty *anti-thatch* and this has just cemented my feelings further!
Alfie - sounds as though you had a lovely - and well-deserved after your hard work - lunch, courtesy of your friend. Rooting for you in your ongoing battle with Mr Pratt
