LFS, you have a great spirit, in your shoes I'd be a total wimp

Lir, glad to hear you've had a better time of it.
Alf, I'm waiting for when you post some really good news!
E-books? I can see the advantages but also the disadvantages. Reminds me a bit of music/film media where you paid more than once to get the media in a new format
I bought some antiquarian books recently that have retained a value for over 100 years, giving pleasure over all that time. Will we ever say that about kindles and downloads in that format?
Two years ago o poo poo'd e readers louder than anyone.
I love books, real books, paper and ink books, nothing will change that,
But kindle on the iPad has had some very real advantages.
The classics are downloadable free if you look hard enough. As are a plethora of (cruddy reads.....I also read the one Martin Lewis recommend and frankly......it was overrated imo but suppose suited a mass market). There have been the odd gem of a free read through the amazon free books,
For some one like me who can easily read double figures of books in a week the paper bulk build up is significant, and even at charity shop prices builds up. And for some one like me who is physically weak, having something to read that's so easily portable is tremendous.
When I run out I can buy the next THEN and there. (Presuming I haven't lost my passwords
).
What I am doing now is reading things on ebook but buying my beloved s in paper back (I'm not a fan of hard backs).
It means I'll be able to leave things I don't want to get rid of but don't particularly want to keep in guest rooms one day and say...pick something....read it....take it home to finish it.
Presuming, praying, one day I can travel again, it means I won't run out of reading material on a holiday. ( my big treat for a trip a way is the four for three offer at the airport book shop......I am on the second by the time we have arrived at the European destination usually).
There are down sides......I have read more pap on e book than I thought people had the possibility to produce. Please, please I wish people would learn its not true that everybody has a book in them. Before ebooks there were very few bos I had not got to the end of because I felt it was worth a clue of hours of my time. Now with e books I have realised, it really is not. The role of the publisher is increasingly going to be important as a trend setter and finder of excellence......I think the former they are succeeding at, but I wish they would succeed better at the latter.....!0 -
Thanks BD...
I used to read every night before going to sleep, I am not a fast reader:cool:, so A book would take me a while to read, with story books, unless the book really grabbed me within the first few pages, I would lose interest quickly..
The stupid thing is we get loads of books in, at work, we sold 6.5 tons ( yes tons) to an amazon seller last week.. but not many books come through that I am interested in, Maybe I should start reading story books, or autobiographies again:D
LIR/BD if there are any authors you want the proper paper book for, just let me know, an I can keep an eye out to see what comes into work for you.
The temp, dropped like a sack of poo this afternoon.
BD.. just had a quick look at the free e-books, and there are some I would find interesting to read... because they are free...but would def think twice about actually buying the bookWork to live= not live to work0 -
I'm prob a bit of a dinosaur and will happily buy books from charity shops on hol to keep down cost and weight, often redonating them after reading. But the glossy ads of backlit pages, virtually unlimited selection, font size control, low weight all make the kindle and other e-book offers very attractive.
Having said that I recently got some 50s magazines, mostly commemorative, but the ads are to die for. Just wonderful! And worth framing. On a similar note an 1889 illustrated Flag of Distress (Capt Mayne Reid) has a lovely ad for Liebig Company's Meat Extract on the hardback cover and great illustrations.0 -
I've been reading the e-reader debate with interest. After wading through the Games of Thrones series, 7 massive books in total, I can see the advantage of having a Kindle. My wrists were aching by the end. I was in the hairdressers on Wednesday night and a lady was sat reading hers whilst she had her hair done.

:TGood news, Better Days and Lir.
Sorry your hard work wasn't recognised, Rummer. That's typical of family life, where we can so easily take others' reliable actions for granted. I do it when my 'magic drawer' produces clean clothes.
No news here. We should get the big doors on the barn tomorrow though.

CTC perhaps dipping your toe back into fiction might be an idea. Depends what you find entertaining really. Like you I haven't got a lot of patience if a book doesn't grab my interest and as LIR points out you can end up with an e-reader crammed full of tat. I've downloaded loads of fiction free just to try out the authors. Have tried to download the ones with more than 5 - 10 positive reviews (to weed out the 'friends and family' of the author
)
I've enjoyed more than I thought I would but you do have to be ruthless with the rubbish. And I have gone on to actually buy books if I have found an author I like.
So exciting to find an author I like, and there are 10 other books in the series!!! Happened across Lee Child last year (sadly not free though) and have worked my way through most of the series (usually in audio-book from the library). The books are formulaic and stretch credibility, but I don't care if they entertain
I did download one onto my Nook from the library and spent a very happy summers afternoon on the sun lounger in the garden reading - seems like ages ago now with all the cold and gloom out the window.
There are over 39,000 free kindle books on Amazon atm http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=sr_st?keywords=free+kindle+books&qid=1385154184&rh=n%3A341677031%2Ck%3Afree+kindle+books%2Cp_36%3A-0&sort=paidsalesrank you can sort by genre down the LHS so you should be able to find something you would like to try in there somewhere.
Thank you for your kind offer re authors - if anything by Laurie R King passes by you.....I love the escapism in these books http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beekeepers-Apprentice-Russell-Sherlock-Holmes-ebook/dp/B006WB7JOG/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1385154888&sr=1-1&keywords=beekeepers+apprentice
lucielle I tried Game of Thrones on audio book but found it hard going. I can see how the book would be heavy, there were loads of CD's in the set. Loved the TV adaptation though, but found it difficult initially to keep track of who everyone is. Is the third series out on DVD soon?It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

Re game of thrones.....
DH was gifted it buy a chum. He is a slow reader and says its not top of his list but doesn't to disappoint chum so ......I am to read it, provide synopsis so he can relay opinion. Shamefully, I do this for lots of books he doesn't have time to read. We really do morph into one person at times.....
I'm glad I got the book reading part of the person though.0 -
I loved the Game of Thrones series and whizzed through it, delightfully easy reading

My reading tastes are very varied although I rarely read popular modern fiction. Currently I am reading Catch 22 and The Picture of Dorian Grey both of which I am enjoying. What I really love is historical biographies of women and I have read loads of medieval and tudor history with some georgian chucked in for good measure
I may also like vampire fiction. CTC I probably have a few books you would enjoy??
Dinner was delicious and I am contentedly full and just about to head off to bed with a good book, see you all bright and early :rotfl:Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
BD I will keep an eye out for that Author, and let you know, when some come in. Aflie, we get autob's in regular.
I must admit, I haven't read a fiction in a very long time, going by the type of films I like, it would have to be light hearted, a bit funny, and a bit saurcey . I did start read, but cant remember what it was called:rotfl: but I know I did enjoy what I read of it:D
who was that old lady Hannah ??? who lived all on her own on a farm? living a real old lifestyle, had her book come into work, but someone packed it with the rest of the books:mad::mad:
Right Youngest has just come in, so I can now stop worrying, and settle down and try and get some kipWork to live= not live to work0
