I only ever worked as a lab tech, best present got when in hospital lab was a bottle of (boring as opposed to good) sherry from the consultant in charge, and that only happened one year as he retired and we never got anything after that.
Hope its legal, its at a law firm :rotfl:. Fwiw, DH almost never works less than a twelve hour day office time. (And often much more) and is on call twenty four seven. Every day of the year. Work hours directives do not apply, That's legal too, if you don't opt out you don't get employed. Many in that bracket pay more in tax than they bring home, When peoe talk about 'not paying tax' in higher income brackets I'm afraid it makes me a little cross, because our reality is not like that. On what he EARNS we should be able to heat our house five times over every year, on what is left after tax and necessary spending to enable that work (travel, clothing, accommodation, training extra to what is paid by form or reclaim able) many on the highest income brackets are making the same choices as everyone else, just with less desperation, but no back up.....and if working like that earns you choice but no support then, its hardly the land of milk and honey for the 'rich' (ok rich aren't necessarily highly salaried....) that it often gets reduced to.
If we were in social housing, me being this ill, and we had no work, someone would have heated us and got us hot water before now, But we are RIGHTLY expected to be self provident.0 -

I think she's right though, that sort of investment would make your place the most amazing home, the kind of uber retreat for rich people.
Personally I love it alfie style.
if any improvements made here ...they would have to put in mains leccy. id say there would be a .001% of the nation who would live with the "will it, wont it" start of a genny.
believe me ive done 9.5 yrs of it and i think only cos ive lived basic all my life and am beligerant that ive coped.
anyone who paid double my rent would NOT cope without leccy...:rotfl::rotfl:0 -
i have some extremely rich friends. they have all started from nothing and in my opinion earnt it. i have nevr been jealous or resented thier wealth. they pay horrendous taxes and its only because they have got to a level by wisely investing that they have anything to show for it.
LIR is right, its almost unfair sometimes when you see hard work not always paying.. and to me its the pride you have not the pounds.
one couple love smart cars [and i mean top end] another couple travel a lot, another owns numerous properties.[which..if she was to let out would actually not see hardly a penny rent as it would be eaten up as a drop in the ocean tax..so why have the hassle] so when people think they are being "show offs" , they dont realise that theyve earnt the right to spend it on what they like.
they have always treated me as a friend and i couldnt be more at the church mouse end .....
i know they would help me but they know id never ask too. and respect my pride in what i have achieved by actions not necesarily monitary...0 -

No, they wouldn't . They'd want to drive out of Town, with a bag ful of lovely munches from waitrose and Borough market put it in a working fridge with stuff in it, knowing it was still on from last week, like wise a small freezer at least.
The places we looked at on the forest were on the other edge, not half as nice and pricey.
.
Almost wish we had bought a cottage on the forest now, no horses, could have just helped you with the minis .....:rotfl:0 -
Lir makes some good points. High earners often work incredible hours and pay high rates of tax. I used to be almost in that bracket

As long as high earners pay tax that's good for all of us. It's when the line is crossed to avoid tax by artificial schemes, or when multinationals create nil tax structures, that I want to build the barricades.
When entrepreneurs build businesses they create employment. Good for them, and even a big huzzah if they treat employees with respect and pay living wages0 -

I have suggested before, that we should have a new 'title' some thing like 'friend of Britain' and a bit like a royal warrant it can be used by companies who don't employ in crazy ways via Ireland to work in London to avoid tax, or other weird schemes. And also of course by individuals who do not elaborately evade.....whether uk citizens or resident overseas nationals of overseas people employing or owning companies fully paying tax here.
Its very hard to work out sometimes where you want your money to go.
The rich v poor thing is very decisive. Its IMO very silly to get het up about nannies, cleaners, gardeners.....its one of the best ways of transfer of assets (so long as conditions are good and legal). Many people's best friend is their housekeeper IME, so its hardly a case of ' us and them' either.
Its just when you bring home LESS then half of what you earn and people say they highest income people aren't paying their share......its galling.
Even with the tax evasion unpleasant avoidance and the richest still pay ' the most'.0 -

funnily enough the "house buyer" couple have a big company now ,local, and she was telling me that every worker gets a "pressy" for x years of work. i know 10yrs they get an all expenses long weekend holiday in paris etc. they all go for a big xmas dinner in a hotel. [in shifts :rotfl:] they all get 2 weeks paid off at xmas, and any seriously sick children/spouse, of gets time off with pay... probably tax deductable but at least in favour of staff.0 -
The divide between the haves & the have nots is disgusting in this day & age. It seems so awful that people will freeze to death this Winter & others have empty houses with heating blaring away.
There are some seriously rich people who own massive tracts of ground - massive parts of the Highlands that are only doing it for tax avoidance. The people who work for them are often in tied housing who can be homeless & jobless on a whim ,,,,don't get me started.
For such divisions to occur there has to be an awful lot of turning blind eyes to such dreadful inequality.0 -

I know some one who has a big house blaring away with heat and land in Scotland.
He was my 'benefactor' when I was first I'll and a well known public figure for being a prat. Very few people know all the good work he does for the people who he comes across who suffer. He is FAR from a saint. But then, neither am I. The same division of have and have not could be applied to almost EVERY one in this country and the majority in some others.....
If land were equally allotted not one of us in uk would be able to have anything bigger than poultry in a free range manner. No sheep, no goats, no pigs......0 -

who would own those massive tracts of the highlands if those that can afford to buy didnt ?
is not in effect any person that rents a house themselves in the hands of the landlord who can chuck them out on a whim?
IMO inequality i think is not necasarily the fault of the person with the riches. anyone can be jobless which in turn could make housing difficult.
look at the big lay offs due in portsmouth. the coal mines.... not due to someone trying to avoid tax ? the higher powers have done far more damage than those that have a few bob now.0
