Four types, percentages are energy saving compared to incandescent (though waste heat energy can help with heating to a small degree)
Incandescent
Halogen (30%)
Compact Fluorescent Lamps(CFLs) (80%)
Light Emitting Diode (LED) (90%)
Dont compare light levels using wattage (energy used), use lumens instead (light brightness measure)
Costs are greater for the energy saving bulbs but, with exception of halogen) they last very much longer, prob 10 years.
Atm, CFLs are prob the best mix of cost/saving but LEDs are prob the lighting of the future.:A:D Thanks. So CFL are what I call Energy Saving. You threw me completely as I'd not heard them called that & thought there was yet another new type.
We have a number of ES bulbs but some fittings just look dire with them in - eg the carriage lights, wall sconces etc. In fact, most of the period-typee fittings where the bulbs can be seen.
We've been toying with changing the GU10 hallogen (8 [dimmers] in sitting room, 3 spots in old kitchen, 12 downlighters plus 2 spots in the utility room) & were thinking of trying LED in a few of them.
It would be remortage time to change them all in one go :rotfl:0 -
rhiwfield do you know the longevity of CFL's as opposed to LED's?
I use the daylight bulbs in the main rooms in the house, they give a nice bright light, but they are expensive (and unattractive).

BD, I'm told av life for CFLs is 10 years, though I've known many last less. LED life is supposed to be 20 years, dont know whether that is accurate though.0

They are in surprisngly good nick - I maybe will get 2" wide slats & put them around the 4 sides of the door & paint out the whole door, drawer front.lostinrates wrote: »Choille, can you add some trim? Over the seventies stuff? Or do you mean on the closed edge?
Give us a picture of them!
If they are really naff, how good an artist are you? Could you use those misty greys to paint a mural scent across them so know one even notices the cup boards and just sees the misty hills ( for example) on them?
Beautiful orange coloured day & have been on the hill collecting the girls up & we've moved them inby. Zebedee is very excited!
I still should be ebay listing but just had lunch & we must do some wood or we'll freeze. We'll soon lose the sun again....0 -
Lovely sunny day in Glasgow! It's 75 in the conservatory and had to pull down blind so I can read the laptop screen
Anyhow, dahlias now lifted and upside down to dry off. As they were planted so late, they were frosted down while there were still loads of buds which was shame. Must start them sooner next year!
Found a pack of aliums so dotted those about, just to get them in the ground. Otherwise just cleared the last of hosta leaves and anything else which had died back. 10s of foxglove seedlings from the one plant that was in the garden, reckon I'll just leave them be and transplant next Spring to the shady back border where the fence still needs a lot of covering.0 -
Itsmehonest - Thanks for that, I could replace all the doors & drawer fronts, but I am just doing a cheapy - well will be once I actually have some plasterboard & wiring in!0

We live with a repainted, yet still grim, 70s kitchen and will be living with it until we have a lottery win
I managed to go for a walk to a local ish park that we have not been to for many years and it was lovely to see the ducks and kick through the leaves. Totally exhausted but for a change in a happy and contended way. I am going to try and get out for a walk each day to speed my recoveryTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
i have had a grim day
poor mabel has been in and out her pen all day. she was just walking through hedges .... with a large mouthfull of vegitation she would come round to my gate and present it to me . she was very disorientated and i think she wanted reassurance/company. she has a job getting into her brick pig house as shes a bit arthritic in her back legs...
a few people complained ...from thier car windows as i walked her back. one "nice" man said she was a menace on the road... i replied [with my known diplomacy] did she run at your car? did she get into your car? no? then F**K off.........
seriously tho i am worried , i have "the people" on standby if it needs to be done....:(
my friend has suggested we move her to where we keep hoss's into the strip paddock and we build her a straw house so she has fresh grass, company and the change may perk her up.
i hand fed her some bananas and grapes ...[i know !] but she wasnt interested in her other foods..:(
do pigs have a menapause ? i know she gets grumpy etc when she has a season.. trouble is if she keeps getting out [i just cant reinforce it any more...shes like a bulldozer] i will get into trouble [law, landlord, agister etc]
SO... the plan is to move her asap. and see what happens.0 -
Oh Alfie I am sorry to hear that Mabel is so unsettled at the moment. It sounds as if your friends suggestion is a good one, Mabel will probably enjoy the company and change of scene and it may discourage her from going elsewhere for a stroll.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0
