Flush with success of changing the kitchen sink, I'm thinking of changing the laminate floor. The kitchen is very "stark" and white and has an off-white floor which is a 'mare to keep clean. I'm thinking having a darker floor will reduce the 'padded cell' effect, the room faces south so could take a darker floor.
I'm undecided between a dark wood laminate
A dark slate which may quickly go out of fashion with the shiny white cabinets -
Another "light" effect of travertine tiles
or a darker terracotta tile effect (my current fav.) -
Any views on the pros and cons?0 -
I have spoken, we recently put down dark wood bamboo in our new bathroom. Its meant to be better than laminate in a kitchen or bathroom, because copes better with moisture.0

I have spoken We just lifted textured laminate from our bathroom which was a nightmare to keep clean as muck got trapped in all the textured bits. Now we have slate which I love the look of but it shows up every splash of water and bit of dust so as long as you are happy with the extra cleaning. To be honest I like the current floor or I would go for the lighter floor or one that is close in colour to the wall tiles.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Why not use a rug?0

Thanx for comments, esp on the graining. Before I changed it to carpet, the lounge had a laminate with grained texture and it was like a giant doormat collecting marks off shoes (I guess the vendors liked laminate...)
My old house had a kitchen floor which I rather liked -
Has it happens, the bathroom is my current house has a dark grey ceramic floor tile which is so cold in a Scottish winter! The sellers never though to install underfloor heating
I was thinking of redoing that with a 'ship deck' laminate with anti-slip rubber inserts -0 -
Slate & tiles are freezing & very hard on the legs - plus very unforgiving if you drop anything.
I don't know much about laminate other than personally I don't generally like stuff that pretends to be what it isn't ie I prefer wood rather than plastic that pretends to be wood. I think that it improves with age, rather than looks worn out after a couple of years.0 -
I was thinking of black & white quarry tiles for the rayburn hearth. I would like a diamond pattern but OH doesn't think it's poss as it will have sharp edges as it's a built up hearth.0

We're getting to the point where we need to choose finishes for the house. I'm struggling. I don't know if it's because I'm Build Weary or because it's been so long since I've lived in a normal house, or is it that it no longer seems important - but I really can't muster enthusiasm to pour over choices. It will just be nice to be warm and dry. Having said that, if everything was white walls and natural materials or wood, I think I'd be hard pressed to object0

Do you need to decide now? We lived in our house for quite a while before making decisions about colours, textures and furniture etc I appreciate that you are in a different position to us but it really gave us the time to make our house the way we wanted. In fact we are still debating over the bedroom 5 years later and the kitchen will need to stay that way until a lottery winTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0
