Fabulous! I'd love wider than normal boards! We have one original floor with wide boards.....in the secret room under the bathroom, so no one will see them, lol! Though we are going to have those boards as the ceiling for the room below we think. It means losing the ceiling lights in there and its a narrow room so we are a little wary of wall lights in there.

just have lamps... i have NO overhead lights only lamps and now when i go in peoples houses i feel like im "on stage"....:rotfl::rotfl:

why do cough and chest medicine taste soooo_pale__pale__pale_

    knat's wee wouldn't even taste that bad:eek::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

You could try cider vinegar. That's all the horse woman takes for anything. :) She also gives it to her horses & dog. The thoroughbred's 32 and doesn't look bad on it. No idea how old she is......could be anywhere between 75 and 80+

I told her I'd been invited to have jabs this year and she replied, "Pah, I don't believe in those! Complete waste of time!" :rotfl:

theres a horrible 3 day "smack between the eyes " type bug around here at the mo. followed by a week of getting over it !
luckily i tend not to get these bugs even in close contact... i do think im immune living like i do..
this is the first house ive ever had central heating in and i rarely turn it on .... never had double glazing either. my son tells me off for leaving the front door open day times ...i like fresh air.
i get quite claustrophobic in what i call "sealed" houses.....

well all the cyclists are gone and i kept the St johns/helpers going with teas and coffee's [and donuts !] they have a cycle repair unit, st johns, a stand with fruit, biskwits and water/juice etc. its very well run.

some of the locals have been up in arms all year re the cycle rides here in the forest. the latest being that the new forest show park [show/equestrian events] has been hired as a meeting point for these events and suddenly the commoners [!!!!! !] say they were going to run a drift [collecting up the horses] on the day of one event .... event booked 1 yr ahead...commoners 2 weeks !!!
they are an embarrasment as far as im concerned. these people are doing a healthy sport [incl. kids] and it lasts a few hours. commoners think they OWN the forest. they need to look at themselves before critisising others [they sabotage the roads, one event they put tacks on the road !!!!] sorry but the minority give the rest a bad name...

    rant over.....
  • Alfie, that is so naff, the commoners don't realise that the cyclists prob buy stuff in local shops etc, so are good for local businesses

I used to have a spoon full of maluka honey every day, but due to the price of it, I stopped, maybe I should find some locally produced stuff.

As we now don't get the cheap fruit/veg cakes etc for the piggies, I want to see if I can get something into the ground..

I ordered from this guy years ago, and they wernt too bad ( didn't order a 100 plants then though)

Davesnave, was just wondering if you would have a look at the list, to see if they are ok to transplant now, or what would be the best ones to consider

Just got in from the lottie, spent 1 3/4 hours there, OH planted some shallots and some garlic (garlic from Suttons that came with with the shallots, and the onion sets that we didn't get to plant today as the rain came on). I dug out a load more couch grass. Typically as soon as we got home the rain stopped!

We still have some onion plants (plants not sets) to get out at home, may end up putting them in pots in the cold frame for now as we prob need to clear the beans first to make space. Also need to work out quite where we're going to put the 2 kilo of Music garlic too! Theory is half on lottie and half at home.

Must chit broad beans and get them into pots in cold frame too. Not managed to get an autumn sowing to work yet, too prone to slugs planted direct, but might get a result if start them in pots? I really love broad beans, but we haven't had any home grown since the first year we had this house, and we didn't get that many then. :(

Still haven't decided whether to go for some potatoes for next year yet. We really love charlottes, so might just do some in those bags if we can't find space at the lottie.

Big work day at lotties next Saturday - cleaning up the boundaries. Lunch supplied! :) Think OH might take some pasty thingies too though. Just hope it doesn't rain!

Been working on the electrics and plumbing today, after a good breakfast was pretty sure I'm a "competent person" as defined by the regs...;)

Wired in a new socket for the washing machine in the garage so it doesn't need a 4-way extension lead to get power, which looks a lot neater. Also changed the switched socket on the freezer for unswitched so it can't be turned off by mistake.

Also wired-up external double-socket in a IP56 waterproof enclosure (necessary in Glasgow :(), connected to a RCB fused outlet so it should flip in trice in the event I run over the cord of the electric mower. It also gives handy power source to the patio for an electric Teppanyaki - so many chemicals from BBQ fuel left in the food.

Plumbing was finally sorting out the combi condensate drain and waste water from the washing machine - simple using 22mm pipe and plastic adhesive on the joints. Added a external syphon arrangement on the combi, so it should gather a fair amount of tepid water, then dump in one go. AFAIK it's continuous dribbles that cause the icing up of external waste pipe in cold snap. We shall see...

RAS or rhiwfield would know much better than me- I'm a winter greens virgin! All I've ever taken through the winter is Lucullus chard and garlic.

I imagine the kale is hardiest, and the cabbages easier than things like the Romanesco calabrese. I simply don't know if it's worth putting things in now to get away fast in spring. :o:o:o

All the greens I've grown later this season have been attacked by caterpillars.

I've recently put some onions in to overwinter and that's a first for me. The onions I grew this summer might have won first prize, but they aren't keeping and the others that came later are even worse. :(

Dahlias are standing in for other perennials and shrubs while our new garden matures. We have something like 25 of them planted, mostly dark leaved varieties and many of them 'Bishops.' :)

Even now, they are still putting on a good show after 3+ months of solid flowering.:)

They've been coming back into fashion, a few years back they were only of interest to allotmenteers for the local floral show. That said pompom's are still a lapse of good taste in some circles.
