Dry clean only?

Well done - I'm sure lots of makers just add 'dry cleam' to safeguard themselves.
I too have washed a wool coat with no probs - but it was from a charity shop so I wasn't too bothered!

I actually washed two dry clean only coats over the weekend. Tumble dried them on low too and they have come up looking like brand new. I was sure hubbies would fall apart but it was fine. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Hi all
I've managed to get a warm woolen jacket/cardy second hand for £3.50 :money: It'll need to be washed as it's second hand but I am afraid of shrinking it. It fits fine at the moment, but I wouldn't want it much smaller....
It's 95% lambswool, 5% cashmere and the label says dry clean only, so I was wondering: how much (roughly) does dry-cleaning cost? Or, would it perhaps be ok in a cold cycle in the machine?0 -
Do you have a tumble dryer? There are some sheets that you can buy that dry clean at home. Cheaper than taking it to a cleaners
I have seen them on amazon.

I was all of my lambswool and cashmere jumpers on a cold wash (no heat if your machine has the option or whatever the coldest setting is). I usually pop them into a mesh bag to prevent snags. I then lay flat to dry (hanging will cause it to stretch in odd ways). You could also handwash the jumper, although I'd say any amount of water does involve a small risk of shrinkage. I've never had a problem with cashmere and wool, but I did once hand wash a dry clean only dress that was never the same:( Only incident in my short years its ever been a problem though.0

Yes, I've got a condenser style tumble dryer, but.. wouldn't it shrink like crazy in the tumble dryer?:rotfl:0 -
I regularly wash cashmere - the best way that I've found is to hand wash it in cool water with Woolite, rinse well and then give it a quick spin to take the weight of water out. Dry flat if you can (in an airing cupboard on top of a towel is best!)
I was taught this by my mother, and I've still got a couple of her very treasured 1950s cashmere jumpers!0 -
Thanks
I just found out it'd cost £4-ish to dry-clean, which isn't too bad as a one-off, but I don't really want to be paying that every time it needs a wash or freshen up.
Another not-very-old lambswool jumper has gone into holes quite badly (though it hasn't shrunk) after having been washed in with the coloured washing each time. It wasn't until today that I realised that you're not supposed to wash woollens with ordinary laundry powder or liquid, because the enzymes attack wool and silk. Oh dear0 -
I wouldnt put it in the tumble dryer with any sheet. Its sure to shrink. I would put it in machine on quickest coldest wash with some woolite. And lay flat to dryDFW Nerd #awaiting number - Proud to be dealing with my debts!
