Dry clean only?

I usually just throw dry clean things in the washing machine on the hand wash cycle at 30 degrees. It basically just sits it in soapy water, then rinses it gently. You could try doing it by hand too. Don't wash it at 60(!), but 30 should be fine.
Years ago I borrowed a dress from a friend and poured champagne all down it which marked. I was "good" and took it to the dry cleaners - and the stain didn't come out! Took it home and wet the stain with some soap and rinsed, and it came out beautifully. Hence doing the above ever since..0 -
I used to know a lady made wedding dresses (commercial setup, not private dressmaker ) She told me when the dresses got marked by machine oil in a snarl up, they always handwashed them and hung to dry. Unfortunately this was after the drycleaner ruined my wedding dress before the wedding because I noticed a grubby mark on it
It's a risk but it does depend on the fabric, any lining and especially if they are the same fabric, because of any shrinkage. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
Hi
Thank you all for the input so far, the dress is 100% polyester, if that helpsgrocery challenge Sept 2012 £21/£3990 -
Firstly don't think you'll get anywhere near the £110 back when you sell it - people will want a bargain.
Don't take my word but being polyester I would risk washing it - by hand and gently. I have put tailored jackets in the machine at 30 degrees but they weren't expensive - I even do handbags.Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day. -- Sally Koch0 -

Hi
Ohh yeah I know I won't get back what I paid for it and wouldn't expect to, which is why I didn't want to fork out another £20 to dry clean it:D but would like to get something back if I canI have threw caution to the wind and thrown it in the washing machine, inside a pillow slip, handwash 30 degree cycle, no spin, fingers & toes crossed, I will report back, if it shrinks, it shrinks will chalk it down to experience and you never know I may be able to wear it myself again if it shrinks :rotfl:

Look at what it's made of. I have loads of Jacques Vert clothes (bought on ebay) that say "Dry Clean only" but they are 100% polyester. I wash them on the hand wash setting in my machine, they are fine.I Believe in saving money!!!:T

I have never dry cleaned a thing on my life.. I had had a gorgeous skirt for about 3 years before I checked the label which said dry clean only!..
Id chuck it in the washer on a wool or hand wash and hang it straight away when done and it will undoubtably be fine.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Well its out and I measured it before it went in and it still measures the same now, although it is wet still, so that could change, perhaps! Can't tell if the stains have come out yet as its still wet, have hung on a hanger to dry, soo fingers crossed!grocery challenge Sept 2012 £21/£3990
