Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

I bought a skirt for graduation (tomorrow) have come to wash it, only to see that it is dry clean only!!! Could I put it on a delicate wash instead? Help!

Not sure why you need to wash a brand new skirt?

I'd be inclined to just sponge and press for your graduation to avoid any disasters. After the graduation then take a chance and handwash on a good drying day. Depending on what it's made of you may need to press it while damp. Lots of manufacturers put 'dry clean only' to protect themselves but I wouldn't want you to spoil your day.

Congratulations and I hope all goes well.

I wore it last week and was going to wash to freshen it. It is polyester and elastaine. I think I will just hang it near an open window to air overnight maybe.

This might be too late, but I'd risk hand washing :)

Good luck with your graduation :j

As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the exisitng thread.

HI I have dress that is 30% silk 70% cotton with 100% cotton lining.

It says dry clean only but could it be washed by hand or wachine (it has a foundation stain on it. Look like it happened when i pulled it over my head.

I don't think my machine has a 30degree cycle as its old but I think there is a wool wash

    thanks

Many manufacturers label things as dry clean only simply to cover themselves against claims. ie wash at your own risk.

I have washed a few items very carefully by hand, remember to rinse well, but take care!
I try to remember to check labels when I buy things now, its so expensive for dry cleaning. I do always dry clean suits for work though, I couldn't iron them properly :)

I have a few silk & silk mix clothes & always put them in the machine on a delicate wash, I'm not too sure though about foundation, isn't it oil based?

I previously worked in a dry cleaners, and a lot of the items we handled were silk, I can only presume the reason it has dry clean only is because silk is such a delicate fabric and needs care and attention. I worked within a supermarket chain, and if we had a customer with an item such as yours, we would suggest that they went to a local independant cleaners, as they have different machines - and could treat more delicate items.

Sorry i seem to be the bearer of bad news. x

Within dry cleaners we had certain chemical cleaner that we could use for stains, but from memory, silk is an item that can't be treated as it would take the colour out of it, - with your item just being mainly cotton, it may be treatable.
Personally I would go to an independant dry cleaners, and ask their advice.

Wellll its your risk but I always wash "dry clean only" things in the washing machine on a delicates wash. In fact.....I washed my silk wedding dress in the machine:D I didn't tell anyone I was doing it though in case it went wrong but it was fine. I did take the extra precaution of putting it inside a white duvet cover though.

Oh and I tend not to spin delicates just let them drip dry. Always works for me.
