House near motorway - would you buy?

I think there are some unrealistic expectations here. If I could afford a £500k house in a quiet village, I would buy one, but in the congested south-east prices are sky high and here only the rich can have what they want. Noise in the garden is a pain but you have to set this against paying £20-25k more for a similar hosue in a quieter street a few blocks away.
At the end of the day, no matter what your budget, it's natural that your *dream house* is out of it. Even the rich (whatever that means) can't really have what they want, because their aspirations will be higher. People's idea of what they 'need' and 'want' will always be somewhat effected by what they can (or think they can or feel they deserve to be able to) afford.
I'd rather save £20-£25K by making just about any other compromise than living on a motorway. (That doesn't seem like much compensation, given the prices in the SE.) But if the *only* way you can tick all your other 'not prepared to compromise on' boxes is to take a house next to a motorway, then what difference does it make what replies you get here?0 -
Her place is showing as sold subject to contract at present!
Of course, some of us been there, and a few more than twice with the same house!
I'm intrigued to see her house, but fair play if she's sold it for what she wanted. I must admit I'm surprised - wouldn't want to be her buyer I'll be honest!
too many comps..not enough time!0 -
Personally I wouldn't. I have just moved off a main road, so not as bad as a motorway, to a cul-de-sac, and the quiet is just wonderful. To be able to sit in the garden listening to the birds and sleep at night with the bedroom window open and not be disturbed is priceless.0

Priceless? I doubt it!! :rotfl:
Nice house 70m from the M4 = £285k
Identical house in quiet cul-de-sac = £320k0 -

When the opinions are not constructive then yes - I will argue against them.Priceless? I doubt it!! :rotfl:

Identical house in quite cul-de-sac = £320kThat would make most of London impossible for you to live in then! It seems to me that this thread is dominated by the point of view of the country bumpkin.
ahhh its good to have you back Tancred, seems the time off hasn’t dulled your self belief!
You already seem to know what you want to hear, so can we all just let this thread die,
Or should I go get a bag of popcorn, again...0 -

JokerNever, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0 -
Oh dear
OP asks for advice - everyone responds 'dont do it'
OP gets snotty/rude and argues back.
If you'd made up your mind already why ask?
Go ahead, buy a house and get no peace and quiet.0 -
Hi
I live in SE and so do understand your difficulty to a point
I live in M25/M3 area and it is very difficult to find any houses where you can't hear some motorway noise....however.....I PERSONALLY wouldn't live any closer to a motorway than I could avoid...I would certainly change my wish list if it meant I had no other option.
Just my personal view, good luck whatever you decide :beer:0
