RAM upgrade - what kind?

There is nothing wrong with using the Crucial scanner, in fact, it is very useful for most people. It is not only for "people who don't know what they are doing".
Obviously the OP couldn't get the scanner working on this occasion though
What a useless post. I'm sure oldgrumpygit can reply for himself.
So make yourself scarce unless you have something useful or at least amusing to post.0 -

What do you call a French sandal maker?
Phillippe Faloppe!
p.s. my post wasn't useless. You asked where he had gone, I gave what I thought would be the reason he hadn't returned. If you didn't want anyone to respond, then perhaps you shouldn't ask the question in the first place?0 -

I just thought it would be easier to replace it with 1 x 2Gb
They are old laptops, currently running Windows XP, (although they were originally Vista when they were purchased), Intel Celeron CPU 530 @ 1.73 GHz (whatever that means
)
You can do that, but because your 512MB module runs slower than the 2GB, it will run at the lower rate. Much like the "As fast as the slowest person" type situation. But there would be no point putting 2GB module in and leaving the 512MB in. XP has a limit of 2GB anyway (from what I remember).
If you get 2x1GB then you can throw away the 512MB, have it run faster and get dual channel.0 -

There are two slots, so it would usually be better to use both channels. 800MHz RAM won't be utilized above 667MHz, so I would go with whichever was better value.
Either way, you won't notice any change of performance with the different clock speeds.
Just having more RAM will make all of the difference. So don't worry about 667 or 800. 0 -

No, the 2GB would replace the 512MbBut there would be no point putting 2GB module in and leaving the 512MB in.

It's 4GB RAM max on XP 32bit. So the OP can leave the 512MB module in if they get a 2GB RAM module.0 -

oldgrumpygit had no problem with our exchange. All good humoured. So don't make a problem out of it. I didn't ask you where he had gone.
Seems your replies can't be relied upon anyway...

Gone elsewhere to do other things but nice to see this thread getting along splendidly without my input.:D0

Seems not, I thought it was clear and simple. Nevermind.
Hope you enjoyed my joke
