    Interesting thought, actually.

I've just thought about the computing power in our house.

    We have.....

    2 x work issued laptops
    2 x personal laptops
    2 x ipad
    1 x imac
    1 x Mac Pro
    1 x old desktop PC
    2 x personal i-phones
    2 x work issued smartphones
6 TB of external hard drives
    4 x printer/scanner etc
Plus various games consoles, media interface, airports, etc, on the home network.

Other than the ancient desktop pc which is only kept around as part of my ongoing but occasional task of converting boxes of old media to modern formats, the rest are used pretty much daily.

    I have no idea why
    .

All those computers are needed so you can run all your sockies at the same time.

As Gen, HMT and others have alluded to we seem to have sevarl or gizzmo these days.

When I were a lad you tended to have one of each available gizzmo at best.

So many gizzmos are versioned these days to create obsolescence in and make you feel "inadequate" amongst your peers, whetehr they cease to function is irrelevant.

The evolution of the next item is so much faster, although many items have plateaued with any extra functionality becoming less and less ground breaking and less of a draw.

Our kids had simple phones from 9 ish and we are still paying for them now they are at uni. When I was a kid we had one landline, now we have the landline and 4 mobiles. That is 5 contracts not one for example.

It is not just the young that are spending on all this tosh it goes through the boomers too.

    Is it necessary expenditure?

It's weird how people measure progress/quality of life in terms of how much "stuff" you have or haven't got.

Standard of living and quality of life are two different things.

But consumerism and the dream of perpetual growth have merged the two over the years and people now assess their lives in terms of possessions and call it progress.

    The American dream?
Yeah, you have to be asleep to believe it.

Quality of life to me mainly means more time to do what I actually 'want' to do and with those that I 'want' to spend my time with.

When I was a youngster I got a transistor radio for Xmas when I was about 9 or so, then in my early 20s I got a calculator.

I still have a calculator but it's a graphic/graphing calculator.....as far removed from my original one as it's possible to be.

Then as an adult I had a Spectrum 128, our son had a Commodore 64 followed by a Commodore Amiga, and we had an Atari.......the kids also had a Sega Mega Drives.........then a Playstation 2

Computing and other electronic gadgets wise, as a household we have
    3 laptops
    1 tower system
    1 notebook
    1 iPad
    1 Galaxy tablet
    1 iPod touch
    2 x iphone 5
    1 iphone 4s (spare)
    1 iphone 3gs (spare)
    1 Blackberry
    1 PSP
    1 PS3
    1 xbox
    1 Nintendo Wii

Grandson has decided he would quite like the xbox one for Xmas......at over £400 and not backwards compatible (I understand) for games he might have a bit of a long wait.

To a degree I think "stuff" can contribute to quality of life....I have children and grandchildren who don't live near us so Facetime and Skype are very useful.

They wouldn't be very successful with some of this stuff. Cash in The Attic maybe

Might have more luck with this approach.

Stuff I had in 1979 that your 8 year old doesn't have.

    1) a lump of wood
    2) a block of coal

    And I thought myself lucky.

Same here re; TV - we only had black and white (until early 80's). No record player until 1982. No telephone until 1989.

    1979 - Occasional holidays with friends/relatives.

Now - we holiday in UK every year. Have done since my Son was six months.

My Son also has his dad living with him, in 1979 my Mum was a 'single parent' and we didn't see our Dad.
    Back on the trains again!
