Stuff My 8 Year Old Has That I Didn't In 1979

I was thinking about what my kids have in our house that I didn't when I was a kid:

- 2nd & 3rd TV
- 6 x computers
- 2 x smart phones
- Foxtel (Sky) with digital recorder x2
- Microwave
- Ice cream maker
- Pancake maker
- E-Reader
- Second Freezer on top of the fridge freezer
- Fancy SLR camera plus a couple of hand held ones (my son has 2 cameras he's had as presents!)
- A squillion toys (kids today have a lot more toys and books than I can ever recall having - the Generalissimos have had from school mates what I would have thought a pretty decent present from my Parents as a kid)
- Air con (ok, fair cop. I live in Aus, I guess it replaces central heating)
- Foreign holidays: A trip to Aus would have been described as a 'once in a lifetime trip' when I was a kid. Now I moan about only going back every couple of years.
- 2 x games consoles
- 2 x hand held games machines

I'm not even really profligate. A lot of the stuff I have is second hand/giveaways. I have 3 TVs in my house that cost a total of $179 between them for example.

My PC was made by my BiL.

The hand held games would be considered obsolete (Game Boys) but an 8 y/o doesn't know that: 1 was paid for new when I was bored in an airport (profligate I know) and the other just seemed to arrive in our house one day. I genuinely have no idea where it came from.

    How often do you actually use the ice cream and pancake maker? !!!!!! IS a pancake maker?

    I live in a Victorian conversion that hasn't been decorated in decades. My digital radio is the only evidence of modern technology. I like to think a burglar would stare in disgusted confusion at my ancient CRT "non-flat" telly and then invoice me for wasting his time.

    Seriously, your 8 year old has all that.
    2nd and 3rd TV?
    6 Computers :eek:
    2 Smart Phones :eek::eek:

    Now I know times have changed and my 4 year old gets to use the PS3 from time to time, but I have no intention of them getting TV's in their bedroom or the need for smart phones at such a young age.

    Pancake maker is a flat piece of metal with an element underneath it. It was a Father's Day present and cost about $10.

    I use the ice cream maker once a month on average. It was a present for cooking a meal for 60 people, a thank you.

    On the other hand there are a lot more one parent families, parental drug abuse plus many other negatives. So it is not all one way, good for some kids a nightmare for others.

    No, blinking flip! We have those things as a household. My 8 y/o has no phones, no computers and no TVs. Crivens.

    I nearly put down duvets but we got them around that time.

    Interestingly I was going to type the following to complete the above sentence:

    "..anyway, I wanted to keep it to luxuries/electronics"

    Then I remembered that duvets were luxuries once upon a time.

    Stuff I had my at kids age but my kids are not having

    * Being able to write with a pen on a paper (nowadays they struggle to write over few hundred words)
    * Less crowd everywhere
    * affordable housing
    * good prospect of having jobs after graduation
    * not having to stare at small phone screen for Facebook 8 hours a day

    ... and the list goes on.

    You always get something but give up something else in return.
    Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.
