Before the price change, the insurance cover was up to £25. So if for example I was sending a small light item under 1kg but valued at £50.. when changing the compensation cover to £50 for an additional £1, it also automatically selected 'signature £1.20' so the total would be £5.20 just for the added insurance cover.A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -
I think the increase cover of the insurance speaks volumes about what must have been going on in the hermes board room over the last few months. What it means, is they don't want to be seen as cheap and rubbish, but are trying to position themselves in the market at a higher platform. They will compensate better where things go wrong. They are probably fed up with all the trashing that goes on on sites like this.Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise. its as the other guy said its basic business sense.
we see it eg. with the gas/electric companies, once one raises prises they all follow suit.
so RM up their price, hermes can do the same but not too much so they still the cheapest.
Where does it leave consumers?
Well if I buy something small this means I am more likely to go to a large brand company who may offer subsidised cheap/free delivery. But I probably would do this anyway.
Generally I goto ebay for things that are either used or they hard to get (so hard to find). the most expensive thing I have brought off ebay was a pc monitor which I am still using now (was many years ago brought it), but I made sure it was a company first, they were just using ebay as a 2nd outlet.
Occasionally I buy clothes of ebay, things like socks and I usually get charged £1.50 for delivery and they come the next day. I will check the seller to see if the prices have gone up and if they specify what courier it is.0 -
In my area, I have noticed a massive increase in the number of people using facebook selling pages for their second-hand clothes, shoes, etc. No selling fees, buyers mostly seem happy to collect within specified postcodes so no postage costs, and items seem to sell very quickly. It can't be a co-incidence that this happened around the time that the Royal Mail prices went up!
Not sure that prices are as high as you might be able to get on an ebay auction, but with the savings on other costs maybe this route is the way forward for private sellers having a clear out?0 -

Facebook selling has bene going a lot longer than the latest RM prices, I've been using it for a couple of years and I came very late to the concept.
It is a real slog though, far more time consuming than ebay and with so many no shows and time wasters I wonder sometimes why I botherI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I have been using Myhermes regularly for the past few months and I spend over £100 a month. I send many parcels using the 1 Kg rate. This price increase really affects me. Why not increase by a sensible amount? 50p more?
BTW, If you book through Parcel2go and prepay £100, they add £5 extra to your account. Effectively this means the £4.20 price is only £4.0 -

I live in a rural area and the local facebook selling groups had few members up until a couple of months ago - with maybe three or four new posts a day over the year or so I've been a member. Also, I used to be the only person selling new goods. Now there are twenty plus items being added daily and a few other business sellers have started listing. I tend to offer delivery (whilst on my way to the Post Office) so haven't had too many problems with no shows, but agree that it's far more time consuming!0 -

I am 'registered' on about 13 selling sites some with as many as 4000 registered users. I still only manage to get about 3 sales a week and quite often not one of those will actually bother to collect.
The usual excuse is 'sick child' ' sick dog' or 'flat tyre' then i never hear from them again.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Gosh - there are only three for my area, and one of those is dedicated to baby & child clothes/products! Trouble is that they're really set up for a person selling one thing at a bargain price rather than having a supply of products - when I list I will often make one or two sales in the first 24 hours, then the listing is buried by new additions and no-one ever sees it. I wonder if facebook will one day try to find a way of taking a cut from any transactions????0 -

I live in London so we have facebook groups for local areas, plus a local area within the next county, plus school areas and for certain things. We have some that are over run with dodgy goods, others that are mainly baby items but will accept other items.
I tend not to sell the same things I sell on ebay, I use it for more modern items that are too bulky to bother postingI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
