I am lucky to be near a Costco and I keep thinking of joining up will have to tag along with my neighbour when she goes next and have a nosey.I can easily handle a large slab of cheddar
I've heard their meat is lovely too just not sure if it'll work out cheaper for us as we can't claim the vat back,OH is a postie and we can join no problem.
Cat food is often £12 for 48 pouches on Amazon.
Tesco had some veg oils on offer this week to if thats any help0 -
Most expensive is fresh meat and fish and then a close second was clothes washing gel...
until this week and we discovered that tesco has one which is 1l or just over 30 washes for £1! we were buying surf pink at £7 per 40 washes i hate the smell of most others. we gave this a go and clothes were perfectly clean and to be fair it doesnt smell like much so i get to add a drop of bargain fabric softner (on offer) and it works out at about 5p per wash even including my fabric softner (i only only a drop we bought 10 bottles so it should keep us going for a long time!
Cheapest is now most likely the wash liquid or value dried spagetti at 19p per 500g0 -

More I'm afraid! No - actually not 'I'm afraid', we like it and can afford it so why should I apologise?0 -

Just had a look on MySupermarket but can't see any Mr T washing liquid for £1 - what one is it so I can have a look when I go shopping later this week - will need to buy some this week!
Thanks.

Hi
regarding cheese - for about a year now we have been buying "own brand" 500g grated cheddar, most stores have it for the same price but I think Mr A is slightly cheaper. £2.12 for 500g (4.24 pk) I started doing this when I realised that it was the cheaper option, saves me grating it, we use less and it freezes well. I confess to preferring Mr T's and Mr M's being the least favourite but it's a bargain and now the only way we buy cheese.
Also hubby gets "own brand" lager now and again at 99p a pack and he likes it.
my most expensive will be the asda meal deal we get once or twice a month for a weekend treat (£6 a time for main, side & dessert) However if we get the deal it lasts us 2 days so isn't too bad at £1.50 pp per day
least expensive is noodles also but I have really gone off them latelyEverything is always better after a cup of tea0 -
Hi Westcoastscott, I have just started doing the second purse challenge. If you look on the food shopping and grocery board in the stickies the thread is there and it is explained well by (I think) Mothership.
Basically, you have your normal grocery money in your first purse. You then transfer an amount to your second purse to start you off. Either £10 at the start of each month to build it up or a one off payment, whatever suits your budget I think.
So say you put £10 in as a starter, you then go bargain hunting with that £10. So maybe you get some deodorants on a Bogof, at £2.99 each. You buy four which costs you £5.98. Your second purse now has £4.02 in it and your stock is worth £11.96 ie 4 x £2.99. When you come to use one of the deodorants you buy it back from your stock at £2.99 paying the money into your second purse. You may also see some cheese yellow stickered to £1.25 from £3.00. You buy it with the second purse money which if you haven't yet bought back any deodorant is still at £4.02 so your second purse is now down to £2.77 and your stock is up to £14.96
Each month add £10 or whatever amount you want to your second purse until you are satisfied with the amount you have in it. I have set my balance at £50 and when I reach that will then pay anything over that amount into my third purse which is savings for Christmas for me.
That sounds so complicated, but once you have your head round it it is a brilliant way to save money, always have money available for bargains when you see them and beat the supermarkets at their own game. I am just repeating what I have learned from those who have been doing it longer so do have a look over on the thread.
Of course you don't have to buy back from yourself at the full price, you set the amount that you want to pay yourself so it could be somewhere between the bargain price and the full price.
God bless. Esther x
Hi Esther, could you post a link to the second purse challenge, I think I would really like to try this, never seem to have enough money to avail of special offers, this sounds like I just might be able to manage it. Thanks so much.Cait, at long last signing on:rotfl:0 -
Cheapest: Morrisons Savers 11p noodles! I eat these at work for lunch two/three times a week (followed by fruit)
Most expensive: Belvita breakfast biscuits at £2.69 when not on offer! I try and catch them on BOGOF when I can but don't always find offers where I can access them! BF has these as he's not a fan of eating before work (he leaves the house at 6.40am) and needs to eat at some point before he leaves work at 12. He usually has some Belvita (the strawberry & yogurt crunch ones) and sometimes a pack of Go Ahead yogurt breaks too 9also not cheap!)
I buy as cheap as possible where I can though so as not to be thrown out of whack by the Belvita etc!, our groceries budget is £100 per month for us and the dog but every third month (quarters end) I allow an additional £30 as we go to Makro and bulk buy chicken breasts, beef mince, crisps, laundry detergent/fabric conditioner, toilet rolls etc.************************************
Oct 2025 Grocery Challenge: £302/£3000
