Meat definitely the most expensive. If I buy a box of paracetamol then that's the cheapest at about 20p, otherwise probably loose onions or carrots - usually about 50p.

I needed some pump handwash recently and was trotting along to a poundshop when I decided to detour via Morribunds. They had a budget one for under 40p. I find their own brand value range (frozen chicken pieces included) way, way cheaper than Lid1 (which I prefer to A1di which is always scruffy and the Super 6 always has a rotten bit in it in my experience).

Most expensive - booze. Cheapest - fresh fruit and veg from the market. And - the local Pick Your Own is due to open this weekend after a long wet cold spring. I'll take a couple of days out next week to go over there and stock up the freezer with fabulously fresh fruit and veg, untouched by human hand. Jam-making season is also about to start in this house.
    Better is good enough.

The cheapest regular price for mature cheddar I've found is in Costco. Forgotten the exact price, but it's under a fiver per kilo. The smallest blocks are all over a kg though so you end up spending £6-8 at a time. If you can cope with 5kg at once it gets even cheaper...

Ok, so you need a membership card to shop there, but the savings are worth it for me if used regularly - and if you just want the occasional thing then odds are that you know someone with a card who would be willing to take you along.

Morribunds ??? Is that a store near you, or Morrisons.

I live alone and last time I went to look for cheese I found Morrisons at £5.20 to be cheapest, adding in a criteria of being "in small packets". They've got some assorted weights vacuum packed mature cheddar and if you have a rootle round in the box you can find the smallest packs. I picked up three last time I was there, ranging in price from £2.33 to £3 a pack, all at £5.20/Kg.

I work on the basis that we're not supposed to put the real store's name as it then turns up in G00gle's searches. Hence Morribunds, A1di and Lid1. (I think it's mentioned on the Grocery Challenge thread.)

I always wondered why people put Mr T, Mr A etc!

Think the cheapest item in my shop was spaghetti at 19p from tesco and sainsburys chicken breasts 4 for £6 with free marinade.

Sometimes the most expensive is cat food or clothes washing liquid. I tend to buy wine from my 'pocket' money too unless it's in a meal deal or a great price.

Thanks so much for your input its really helpful.
I never thought to look in on the grocery challenge as I'm usually guilty of going way over rather than under budget :o

I'm a total cheese a holic,I can't get through the day without at least one chunk so a lot of our budget is spent on cheese and I love the strong sort so its always a bit dearer.

I have frozen a few blocks and I stocked up on chickens and chicken breasts when MrT had them half price a few weeks ago.

Currently doing the same with lamb as they had that on offer this week but surprisingly that was cheaper than my cheese!

Can anyone recommend a good place for strong but cheap cheddar?

Iceland mature cheddar is 5.00 a kg and its lovely, but my absolute favourite when on offer is Catheral City though its only 350 grams now instead of 400.
