    good thread.
My cheapest was the cheap L!dl noodles - about 11p i think.

I get their cheese 'spire' something which is £1.99 for a 350 or 400g block. Dh really likes it and he is fussy about cheese.
    Dearest - probably chicken.

Do you spend more or less on wine?

Ours are probably ground almonds, vegan rice milk chocolate and knorr stock cubes, decent washing machine liquid - it's always the smaller things that catch me out, even though they last for ages. We have serious allergies so only buy fairy washing liquid - every time I try to change we have skin issues, and we have severe food allergies so strictly no dairy or eggs - makes it difficult to purchase cheaper varieties of items.

Can anyone tell me more about the second purse challenge? sounds intriguing!

Hi Westcoastscott, I have just started doing the second purse challenge. If you look on the food shopping and grocery board in the stickies the thread is there and it is explained well by (I think) Mothership.
Basically, you have your normal grocery money in your first purse. You then transfer an amount to your second purse to start you off. Either £10 at the start of each month to build it up or a one off payment, whatever suits your budget I think.
So say you put £10 in as a starter, you then go bargain hunting with that £10. So maybe you get some deodorants on a Bogof, at £2.99 each. You buy four which costs you £5.98. Your second purse now has £4.02 in it and your stock is worth £11.96 ie 4 x £2.99. When you come to use one of the deodorants you buy it back from your stock at £2.99 paying the money into your second purse. You may also see some cheese yellow stickered to £1.25 from £3.00. You buy it with the second purse money which if you haven't yet bought back any deodorant is still at £4.02 so your second purse is now down to £2.77 and your stock is up to £14.96

Each month add £10 or whatever amount you want to your second purse until you are satisfied with the amount you have in it. I have set my balance at £50 and when I reach that will then pay anything over that amount into my third purse which is savings for Christmas for me.

That sounds so complicated, but once you have your head round it it is a brilliant way to save money, always have money available for bargains when you see them and beat the supermarkets at their own game. I am just repeating what I have learned from those who have been doing it longer so do have a look over on the thread.

Of course you don't have to buy back from yourself at the full price, you set the amount that you want to pay yourself so it could be somewhere between the bargain price and the full price.
    God bless. Esther x

  • Dearest - meat and booze.
Cheapest - value stuff eg cornflakes, jam and pasta sauce.
  • Cheapest item for me used to be aspirin from Boots at something like 19p. They've stopped doing those, although I think they do one that is still quite cheap. Cheapest I can currently find is Waitrose, 24p.

Most expensive, fresh meat of one sort or another. I like to go to a local butcher who mostly serves trade customers (pubs, restaurants, etc), but has a small retail counter. Not cheap, but better value than the supermarket, less packaging, and they are real butchers and will cut you exactly what you want. Last thing I bought was a couple of Oxtails (£17 altogether), which lasted for about a week.

Thankyou EstherH that sounds like a really good plan! I find it difficult to find money for special offers when they come around, or extra money for groceries when i'm in a city with more choice. Shall give it a try

I don't buy any wine.. it is vile stuff I think I have only ever had 3 sips of wine in my life.. all different stuff and all as disgusting as the last.. the smell actually turns my stomach.. The only alcohol OH buys is at Christmas as presents for others.. and the very very occasional can of beer for himself.
