We have a really good sofa bed. Probably more comfortable than our bed. That sofa is pretty nice slept on as a sofa for one too. We also have a day bed I sleep on sometimes, and have slept on with dh, and another sofa long enough for a really tall man to sleep on. If we have guests who are a couple or family we give them our room ( and a second couple the sofa bed if necessary) and sleep on the sofa / day bed with our doggies who think its an adventure.

We've got a really comfy futon (although I've slept on some shockers so I appreciate that's not always the norm!) It was a really cheap one from argos years ago and is still going strong. It doesn't get used as a bed much these days but is in use as a sofa all the time.

The worst I was ever offered was one of those folding ones. I gave up after an hour and slept on the floor.

My sister had a blow-up mattress but in winter the cold from underneath made it really, really uncomfortable. In fact, I didn't sleep a wink and took myself onto the floor in the early hours.

The problem for older people is that most temporary guest-beds, if they are not sofa-beds is that they are far too low to get out of comfortably. Or at all.

Airbeds are just a giant plastic bag of cold air which conducts heat away from you at a tremendous rate. You really have to add a layer of insulation on top to make it comfortable. An opened out sleeping bag, spare duvet or a couple of fleece blankets will do the trick, held on with a fitted sheet.

You can get double height airbeds btw, lots of old crocks like me use them for camping.

Yep, I'm aware of that now but my sister didn't consider it and there wasn't a spare duvet or anything else I could find in the middle of the night. The second night was OK but it wasn't easy trying to scramble up out of it in the morning. I think my years of sleeping on the floor should be over at my age (58)

Our futon is a double sofa which is our main sofa in the living room. Folds out into a double bed. To be honest, it's so comfortable that we sometimes sleep on it in the living room when we want to watch tv! However, it's from Futon Company and did cost about £600. Worth it for us though.

our guests sleep on the sofa, cos that's what we have.

Having mooched about a bit ;) the best sleep I've had was on my brothers sofa-bed. Expensive option though :(

Well it looks like the general consensus of opinion is that a sofa bed might be the most preferred option comfort wise.

However, I can't justify spending sofa bed prices just for someone to sleep on temporarily, especially when we don't even need a sofa. (Sleeping on our main sofa itself isn't an option either.)

Ho hum, decisions decisions. What to do......

Whatever you decide on, sleep on it yourself to test it.

We stayed with friends who gave us their bedroom because it had enough room for kids as well (lilos on the floor) and used their spare bed. They'd had loads of people to stay who had slept on the mattress without making any comments. They were horrified at how uncomfortable it was and went out the next morning and bought a new mattress.
