You said no-one else got my point and clearly as you admit two people did..one would be enough to prove you wrong and you were. Could you be wrong also about the use of the word monkey when describing someone at the end of the phone? Y/N ?

    N. Definitely N. But don't let it prey on your mind. I'm off...

Of the 1493 views on this thread, and as I said discounting the person who goes on thanking sprees for entire threads for no apparent reason, 1 person thanked your posts. Percentage-wise, that's pretty much as close to 0 or no-one as makes no odds :)

edit to add, on that note I'm off to enjoy my weekend. Hope you have fun finding racism where it doesn't exist. Keep fighting the good fight :)

You have resorted to 'views' to try to make your point and are off to enjoy your weekend, oh dear....you lied and have been found out.

Waiting for my OH to turn up, so time for another post :)

OK then, you resorted to 'thanks' to think that someone supported your incorrect point. Going solely on what was actually posted by people here, not a single person posted anything in support of your incorrect stance on the word 'monkey'. No-one, as I said before.

Have a nice weekend, though I suspect you won't :)
    Def logging out now.

There are several "animal" names that are used to be rude (but not racist) about people: dog, cow, monkey, pig/swine etc etc

monkey can also be a racist term of abuse in certain circumstances eg football

But if the people you are being rude about are white or their ethnicity is unknown than it is difficult to see now this can be racist. (If they are black definitely don't use it as they could easily think you intend it as a racist insult.)

I must have lived a sheltered life because not once in 28 years have I heard the word used monkey as a racial slur. I have heard people called monkey before and have been called and used it myself (cheeky monkey etc.) but never as a racial thing. As someone who lives in a not very diverse rural area where racism is still a quite a big problem (getting better with each generation but still all too common for my liking) if it was a commonly used racial slur it would be used around here.

Maybe it's just because I can't stand football, I'm obviously lacking an education on racial slurs used in the game.

Slowhand, you have taken offence to something that wasn't intended to offend you, it wasn't used in a racial way (if said racial way even exists). If it is at all used as a racial slur it is a relatively new term and has been used for hundreds of years as a non racial insult and that is still it's most common use and will remain so for a very long time.

Is 'code monkey' or 'grease monkey' racist? I'd say clearly not, since they're aimed at a profession and not at a race. If these terms aren't racist, why would 'call centre monkey' be? From memory it was only ever linked to the profession in this thread, and certainly not to a race. You couldn't even call it xenophobic because there wasn't a mention of them being foreign that I remember.

'Monkey', when linked to a profession, is a word that I take to be a synonym for unskilled. If OP had said 'unskilled call centre staff' would you have taken that to be only referring to those call centre staff that were of a different race.

It's a little disingenuous to try and link a word that is not inherently racist and was not at all obviously used in a racial context with words that are exclusively used in a racial context.
