The use of the word 'monkey'as a term of abuse has racial abuse connotations. You may not be thinking it but that's the way it is.

That really isn't the way it is. I've heard many people being called a "monkey" but none of them have been black.

I think I called my (white skinned) niece a cheeky monkey once... I'm sure I've heard others say similar things.

Hang on... Does this mean that... Curious George is racist?! And we never ever realised...

There are all kinds of monkeys... cheeky monkeys, little monkeys, grease monkeys, chunky monkeys, CAD monkeys, meter reading monkeys, the list goes on ad infinitum.

Back on topic(ish), Orange even have a call plan called Monkey

It may be used in racist situations, but this is a relatively recent development. It is used in non racist situations and has been so used for all of my life.

In the context of a call centre, I bring to mind the statement 'a million monkeys sat at a million typewriters for a million years could not produce a single line of Shakespeare' I think it is apt to use the word 'monkeys' in relation the employees in a call centre who abuse their customers trust and slap them into a (an invalid) contract without authority

I am afraid I am consigning your objections to the 'politically correct bin. Many or most call centres are abroad these days. So whatever term of abuse you heap on their employees could be argued to be racist. Effectively, it places foreign call centres above abuse. And I am not having it.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

Really?!? From a detailed post asking for help, this is the part that everyone has taken as the most important point?

One person did, and was shot down as taking offence unnecessarily.
The rest of us are waiting for confirmation it was actually Orange that called, rather than one of the many many companies selling mobiles who pretend to be from the networks.

Abusive? Yes. I did not miss the abusive nature of the comment. But I don't think it is unreasonably abusive.

    Ah... 'reasonable abuse'.

    An interesting concept. ;)
  • OP this happened to me 2 months ago with Vodafone.

The difference is I sent back the 2nd phone as I realised within 7 days they had set me up an extra line (&phone) and not upgraded my initial account.

As others have said, request the call in question gets listened too.

Unfortunately, by selling the phone, you may have put yourself in deep doo-doo and by this I mean you will probably remain liable for all further payments under the contract(s) to Orange.

Just because you sold the "crap" phone does not mean you can get out the contract.

Sorry this is not the answer you are looking for, but I speak from direct experience.

(To salt the wound even more, vodafone compensated me for the time I spent sorting out the mis-selling error their end - this wouldn't have happened had I sold the phone - it was a nokia lumia 920 btw)

Given that many call centres have been outsourced to Asia I'm surprised that so many appear not to get my point. We have moved on from what used to be acceptable surely in terms of words. Is goliwog, sambo or paki okay because it once was?

!!!!!!. No-one else got your 'point', due to it being a stupid point that was incorrect and you were shot down because of this.
Frankly, you're an [removed]. Is your only motive on posting in this thread to try and stir up racial tension where THERE CLEARLY WAS NONE INTENDED ?
When you grow up, hopefully you'll realise that you don't have to take offence at the use of a word and give it connotations that it was never meant to have. The word monkey was NOT used in this context as a racial epithet.

Your bringing up other racist words, that no-one else has used anything like, shows your personality clearly. You are [removed].
