Anti-Social Driving/Tailgating fines

The worry is, the many hundreds of other...apparently competent [or, they think so?] drivers who patently cannot cope with that slow vehicle.
That, for me, is the worry..not the slower vehicle!
So many whizzing along, but in truth, barely able to cope, or...labouring under a misconception?
Unfortunately not helped by the cocoons of "safety" that are modern cars.
Even modest cars produced over the past 10 - 15 years give you very little appreciation of what 70, or even 60, mph actually means because theres no sense of "this is fast" involved.I am concerned that if middle lane hogging is enforced too strictly then we are going to start seeing people pulling into every single two-car-length gap for a couple of seconds and then coming straight out again, all at 70mph even though there is nobody behind in the middle lane.
That happens quite a lot anyway - usually by the idiot who's been sitting on your tail as you wait for a sensible gap to move over and seems intent on "teaching you" the "move left" rule by weaving in and out of the lh lane (often without indication cos they can't breathe and work the stalk that fast) having got past.0 -

This is the one thing I really really hate about the Mondeo. It literally feels like playing some sort of computer game it's that disconnected, only difference is the cabin is so heavily soundproofed that the games have more convincing sound effects.
It does my head in that in the Mondeo I have to manually concentrate on things like not tailgating, calculating safe stopping distances etc. and then I switch to the Cefiro and do the whole thing to a greater standard by pure feel/instinct.0 -
Err, the cause of people getting frustrated and undertaking is drivers who hog the middle lane. Best to target the cause rather than the effect?
I appreciate the sentiment, but middle lane hogs aren't the cause...... The cause is poor education, the cause is the reason they think they should be in the middle lane.
As it's not taught by driving instructors, so it MUST be something passed down via friends/family.
It's exactly the same as "Road Tax", people think it exists because it's a commonly used phrase, but it hasn't since 1936 and it causes no end of trouble for cyclists and the like.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

The problem is selfish people who do not consider other drivers, the motorway system would run so much more smoothly if simple rules were observed, in turn it should reduce the amount of tailgating .
There are more questions than answers :shhh: :silenced:WARNING ! May go silent for unfriendly repliesPlease excuse me Spell it MOST times

Seems different people agree with different rules here and disagree with others. I really don't see what the problem is with staying in the middle lane on a motorway....
Yes you are. Some vehicles are not allowed in lane three. So you sitting there doing 50 ARE causing an obstruction. If you find yourself on a motorway with nothing for a mile in front or behind does it really matter what lane you are in? You would not be causing an obstruction, annoyance or danger to any other vehicle.
And as so many people in lane 2 don't seem to use their mirrors, they often don't realise that I'm behind and wanting to get past legally.0 -

To be fair he did say "nothing for a mile in front or behind". If you're waiting to get past then that condition doesn't apply.
Also remember that there's no law about passing on the left, so just go past them, hopefully it will wake them up!0 -

I was on the M6 on a Saturday evening, Heading south towards the M1 (S). I must have undertaken at least a dozen cars. And not once did i move out from the left hand lane. Cruising between 60 and 70mph, So not speeding either.
(I am not undertaking i am passing on the left because the traffic to the right is moving slower than me. Weaving in and out is different matter.)
Yet most of them still sat in the middle lane, I must have woken a couple of them up because they pulled over as i passed them. But mostly they just sit in the middle lane.
Try the M5 south in the early hours on a Sunday morning. If you dont find at least one person between J1 and J4 sitting in the middle lane on an empty motorway i will eat my car.
Never seen a police car though.
Well lets hope you get an on the spot fine for your cocky attitude towards undertaking.
Passing on the left is undertaking, and is illegal in this country.0 -
Seems different people agree with different rules here and disagree with others. I really don't see what the problem is with staying in the middle lane on a motorway. If people want to overtake they can go in the fast lane. You can't realistically be in the slow lane because it is filled with lorries, caravans and elderly drivers doing about 40mph. Constantly weaving in and out of the slow lane would cause more problems than sticking to the middle. But I agree people in the middle should not be driving slow as well, and should stick to 70mph.
On the other hand I do have a problem with people queue jumping. When there is a long line of traffic waiting for some congestion and some arrogant **** just shoots past in the lane on the side an expects to get in the front. Wait your turn like everyone else.
Nobody is going to get fined for staying in the middle lane if they are moving faster than slow moving vehicles in the first lane.
When you will get fined is when you sit in the middle lane when you are moving slower than some of the traffic in the first lane, forcing them to go across 3 lanes to pass you.0
