Phone calls from Bank re neighbours debt..

    My neighbour does not know my phone number but Santander in their reply to my formal complaint wrote "it is out of our control if third party registers an incorrect number against their personal details". Presumably this "third party" is my neighbour. I did not tell my neighbour my landline (the phone number Santander used) ever. Why would I?? I have no relationship with them other than being a neighbour.

    Clerical error or not I can never ever prove to the Banking Ombudsman that I did NOT give my neighbour my landline number.

    I now have a new landline number and thank goodness there are no more calls..

    Let me get this right.

    You have had the same phone number for the last 30 years. You are registered ex-directory and with the TPS

    Presumably you have provided your number to friends and family you like to stay in contact with, even if you've never given it to your neighbour.

    And all because of the odd telephone call from Santander you changed your number?

    So not only did you have all the rigmarole of changing your number, re-register with the TPS etc, you have to also tell all your family, friends, others who may need to keep in contact like perhaps your doctor, dentist, bank, employer, etc.

    When all you had to do was explain to Santander that the person they were trying to reach does not live with you, but actually lives next door, and ask them to refrain from calling you in any attempt to reach your neighbour

    Yeah, right ...

    Not that simple .. at least 3 calls a day .. went on for 5 months --- told Santander by email, letter (a formal complaint) and on the phone the person was my neighbour and the calls continued... If you can tolerate that then ....

    I did but they were very persistent and the phone operater told me I was being rude!!!!

    You haven't answered this question. If you are certain that the neighbour doesn't know your number then this is a far more likely explanation than Santander trying to use your number (which if they got it from your AN account they must know belongs to you) to attempt to contact someone who they know doesn't live at your address. I don't think even Santander are that stupid :D.

    on the other hand, they did carry on calling multiple times per day for five months despite being told of their mistake

    Which you should have followed up with a complaint to the FOS - a lot easier than the hassle of a new phone number.

    A complaint to the FOS is a waste of time ... How do I prove that I did NOT give my neighbours my phone number? Net result would be Santander would be found to have done nothing wrong...

    Maybe somebody can give me a bit more faith in the FOS???????

    Changing my landline number was easy as I don't use it only have it as part of a "package" deal. I use my mobile for everything and Santander did not ring me on that number.

    the complaint would be that they failed to stop calling when told they had the wrong number
