Plusnet - Wifi signal strength

Hi all

I've just signed up with plusnet, however I wondered if anyone else has/is experiencing the same problem as me.

We've been connected for about 2 weeks, but having wifi signal problems:

1. in the room with the box (main phone line point) signal is full

2. in room with the box turn my back on the box and the signal drops by half

3. in the next room approx. 2.5-3m (1 wall/wodden door) from the box, signal drops by half

4. in bathroom 5m away from box (2 walls) signal down to 1 bar
We've been sent 2 boxes in total and a 3rd is now on its way as they think its the box.

5. in the bedroom 2.5m through a wall just about half signal.

6. spare room through 2 walls 7/8m no signal.

we've tried every channel nothing works, i've looked at what other channels other people are using most on 6 or 11 .

No idea why plusnet are sending us a 3rd box as the 2nd made no difference.

Anyone else had this problem, any ideas on how to fix it?

Use a wi-fi repeater in the weakest zones, or use HomePlugs.
This is not really Plusnet's problem, as the reception around a house can vary enormously, and will largely depend on distance and the construction of your house. If you have solid masonry internal walls or foil-lined plasterboard to get through then any signal will be greatly reduced. You've changed channels, so it's not an issue with an adjoining network clashing.
You could try raising the router up (get it away from any metal objects and other electronic devices), or buy a better antennae, if it's the detachable sort.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

All walls are Solid, no idea re plasterboard, but even without obstruction move 3m and you lose at least half the signal.

Router is 1.5m off the ground and as far from electrical devices as I can (opposite corner).

There are no antenna on the router.

There is a whole host of things that can conspire to cut reception, and nothing to do with the router - DECT cordless phones, ISM-band toys like temperature monitors and the like all cause interference as can products nearby (neighbours) etc that you may not be aware of.

Change the channel your router uses for WiFi, or use software to scan for a lesser interference channel to use - InSSIDer is good. Lastly if your router is dual band, switch to 5GHz instead.

We have a regular phone (not cordless) No toys.

Only wireless products are a TV, ps3, x box, 2 laptops, 2 mobile phones, none of which have caused us issues before.

Our only neighbour is 1 flat upstairs, house next door (opposite end to our router) other nearest place is across the street.

Changed to every channel with no effect I've used inssider and all other bands with in reach are on 6 and 11.

Not sure if its dual band.

They are definitely solid walls the flat block is only 2 floors mine and upstairs and is circa 1900's.

We are at the end of a row of cottages built at the same time.

There are quite a few complaints on the Plus net forum about the poor wireless signal on their 582n router. I have the same problem. In a room adjacent to where the router is sited, about three metres and line of site (no walls etc. in the way)the signal drops by about half. With only one solid wall between router and laptop there's a loss of around three quarters.
Previous routers with an external aerial have been fine.
    Go upstairs, no chance!

This is basically the same issue I have.

I can stand with my phone for example facing my router same room etc and get full signal turn around so my body is between the router and my phone and it drops by half.

Where is the plus net forum?

How/have you resolved the problem? Have plus net done anything?
