Of course they can do it - it's up to you whether you want to put up with it and choose another venue that will allow you to bring your own cake.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.
  • They can do it, I arranged a party once and I told them that I wanted to bring my own food, they also said I couldn't because of food hygiene. The guests could be ill through food poisoning and may want to sue the establishment because they are eating there and the ill guests could kick up a fuss and put the company's name into disrepute.

Would they be willing to make the rainbow cake?

I think the cake they provide is a run of the mill sponge cake from what she was saying on the phone.

No, conveniently they quoted me for a cake that they would make. The thing is dd had asked me to make her a specific cake (a rainbow cake with various layers) so I'd like to do that for her.
This can't be an isolated case of not providing what the customer wants; you would have thought that this kind of venue might be a little more accommodating of kids' wishes?

McNeff is right, take your business elsewhere. Or if you're feeling cruel or even just democratic, let you 5 yo decide which is more important, the party place or the cake.

    That's all?

I'd look for somewhere else where you can take your lovely rainbow cake with you. Did your daughter have her heart set on this particular place?

Dd doesn't know about the party, she wants a party but no idea where. I wanted somewhere different as soft play centres and community centre parties are very common round us, which is fine and the kids love them but I wanted something different and as dd loves animals I thought they'd enjoy petting the animals etc then having a party and some food.

    Thanks for your comments

I don't think it's unreasonable TBH. If you bring in a cake that is contaminated with nuts and a child has a reaction it won't be you who gets sued, if you bring in a cake and people are ill it won't be you who gets sued. Businesses just can't afford to take risks like that these days.

I would imagine that with it being a petting zoo they have to be even more careful with food hygiene that soft play places etc are.

Can you not have her rainbow cake at home for the family? I don't think it's worth cancelling an otherwise perfect party for the sake of a cake.

Personally I think they should be more concerned about children petting animals, on their premises, and then eating food on the same premises as a health and safety risk.

I would vote with my feet to be honest as it seems like just another way to make some more money out of you :( If LO would really like the party there thought could you have the cake at home ?

yes, agreed, and up until recently it was considered rude to take your own food in to an eating establishment

That's what I'm thinking. Personally I think it's unreasonable. If I had it at home and any child had a reaction would they sue me? Likely not, it is an unforseeable situation and if they had a known allergy they would make it known before watching their child eat something that may cause a reaction.

I personally think they are trying to squeeze more money out of me, and who can blame them after all they are a business but I don't think I'll be spending any money there, sadly.
