Sorry, but that just seems like a daft decor decision to me.

Choosing cream for the parts of the house that take the most wear and are most likely to get dirty. Who started that trend? Its baffling!

Couldn't agree more. Forget children, I'd spill stuff all over cream carpets, and I don't need the stress!

My mother deliberately chose what she described as a "Ribena-coloured carpet" for our living room when her children were all young, to avoid stress.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Do some people prefer patterned carpets and fabrics in dark colours because they can get them mucky and pretend they're clean? Is that it? And brown towels too?

What do you use your towels for?!

I have wooden floors and black leather sofas, other fabrics and furnishings are a variety of colours and patterns, because nobody walks on them.

Because a door mat will remove everything?

Shoes can damage flooring too, it's healthier to take them off rather than wearing shoes all day.

Nobody is talking about wearing shoes all day. They're talking about wearing shoes in someone else's home.

Again...healthier is relative. For someone with impaired immunity picking up fungus or whatever from other people is not healthier.

Ive got a huge white rug in the living room & cream carpets on the stairs & landing and the bedrooms.

    .

How can anyone relax and enjoy life in their own home when everything is so easily marked?

A home is for living in, relaxing, doing some things that are messy, as simple as eating a jam sandwich.

Bet no one has a relaxing glass of red in your living room.

I bet you're the kind of germophobe who uses anti-bac cleaner on every available surface too. A little bit of dirt has never done anyone any harm.
