Crysler Grand Voyagers/Other decent MPVs

Been thinking about getting one of these for our camping trips as our own car is far too small and we normally got with friends so one of these as its larger seems ideal to get as would fit 4 adults and all the camping gear.

Now I really dont have that much money to spend on one and have been looking around auto trader to try and get an idea of what would suit my budget and for under £2K there seem a lot of MPVs for around that price but I really dont want a fiat Multipla!!

Would this be worth it or are high mileage MPVs and the Voyager in particular not worth the hassle ?

Thanks

I'd avoid high miles Grand Voyager. They arent terribly reliable and cost a fortune to repair.

I'd an 07 one as a trade in with 100K miles and it was a pig of a thing. Cost us £1,000+ to get it running right.

1.9TDI Sharan / Galaxy or Alhambra.

If you only want it for a occasional holiday, might not hiring a minibus when the need arrises work out considerably cheaper, and spare you the hassle of a potentially unreliable older vehicle?

We've started going 2-3 times a year and we thought about hiring but for that many times and for a week at a time we thought just buying one would be better to be honest. If we can get one that will last another 3 years then we would be encouraged to go more and hiring would end up costing too much, we think, over the price of buying one.

Thanks for advice motorguy, we just thought the crysler would be bigger but will check out the Sharan and Galaxy too.

Theres no doubt the Grand Voyagers bigger than a Sharan or Galaxy.

With 4 of you, remove the 3 seater and it'll be massive.

In our 4 years of ownership, (apart from the timing belt/pulleys/waterpump) the biggest outlay has been the handbrake. Every year come MOT time, it's needed work.

Oh and there was the porus original alloys which I think is a common issue as well.

    Still love it though.

    Ours is around 150k now

Edited to add, if theres only 4 of you, I'd probably look for a large estate car. With all the seats in, I'm sure the Grand Voyager has a similar boot capacity to a Mondeo Estate.

I wouldn't even travel in a Voyager let alone buy one! one of the biggest death traps in recent years...

Up until 2007 it was only NCAP 2 star rated.....

"The Voyager did so badly in the frontal impact that it earned no points, making it the worst of the group by some margin. The body structure became unstable and the steering column was driven back into the driver's chest and head. The Voyager acquitted itself better in the side-impact test, but there was still a fair risk of the driver injuring his abdomen."

Post 2007 it went down to one and half stars!

"The Euro NCAP frontal impact tests simulates crashing a car into another of similar mass and structure. This means that the ratings can only be meaningfully compared between cars of the same type and size.[6] The following structural categories are used:
    • Passenger car
    • MPV
    • Off-roader
    • Roadster
    • Pickup
In each category, cars within 150 kg of one another are considered comparable.[6"

Whats the odds of being involved in a collision with another vehicle that weighs between 1900kg and 2200kg? (assuming you crash at all).

The Voyager meets required standards, thats good enough for me.

Pretty good chance these days actually, it might be good enough for you that's your choice but its only fair to point it out to the op. Personally I have pushed my luck enough times already than one more and drive one of these.

We have had a number of Viano and Vito over the years. We have a Vito sport with all glass. 5 seats, full climate and enough space for all the bikes, camping stuff, etc, etc ...... Wonderful!
Vito is particularly good now on the Euro 5 engine. We have a place in France so travel lots.

Is a towbar with a trailer fitted to your existing car not an option?
