if you smoke, change to tobaco, bulk buy filter tips and papers from ebay

just picking on one of the suggestions.

what is wrong with "if you smoke, stop"?

it's not just the money you waste when you smoke, you are wasting yourself (and perhaps others who can't escape your smoke).

There speaks an ex 40-a-day smoker. I know, they are the worst - - but they do know from their own first hand experience just how incredibly stupid smokers are.

I am with you on that one, with the price of cigarettes these days, quitting can get you a house deposit/car.

I have started trying to save money, so to do this I'm driving as economically as I can. Our car has Cruise Control, and I live 30 miles from my work. So, by doing 58mph @ 2500rpm I am getting a much higher MPG than when I used to drive @ 70mph. I would say it is totally worth it because instead of filling my car every 4-5 days, it is only needing it 5-7 days (depending on how many short trips I make after work each day)

Driving alone is a terrible waste of money. Look for someone to car-share with -- that's an easy trade of a little convenience for a lot of money if you can organize it right.

If you must drive so much, think about installing an LPG conversion in the car.

I put all my 1p and 2p coins in a big whiskey bottle.

Best tip I can offer for shopping is to make a meal plan for the week and use it to generate a list. Then, when shopping, if it's on the list you can buy it, if it's not - don't. Provided you have a modicum of will power all these 'tempting' offers can be happily ignored.

The only time we break this is if there is a special offer on (e.g. our favourite tea bags / coffee / whatever), when I'll happily stock up.
May contain nuts. Your mileage may vary. Batteries not included. Thanks to all posters :D

Do you empty the bottle [of its original content] before or after?

Work very long hours. You don't have to spend money socialising - you are mainly too tired. You don't really spend money at all, because you are always at work.

And you are actually being paid to be not spending...

Actually I don't do this any more, but it definitely works!

I stopped drinking (alcoholic beverages) at home completely. Don't miss it at all but I still enjoy a few beers or wines on a social occasion.

  • Shopping-wise, getting our toiletries, washing powder, cereals, crisps (Ringo's are ace!) and doggie treats from Poundland, 99p stores etc.
