When my daughter was at nursery, one of the kids sent out a gift list with their birthday party invitations. They lived in a nice big house, and obviously weren't short on cash, and became talk of the nursery for a couple of weeks over their cheek at the gift list - there was nothing under £25 on it, and most of the gifts were to be bought from ELC or Toys R Us, both of which were some distance away.
A group of us clubbed together, and bought a few items off the list between us, popping £10 in from each child, which we all though was more than enough. Child seemed very happy with her presents, party was great, all was well.
A few months later, my daughter had a birthday party at the local soft play centre, and above child was invited, as were a few others from nursery.
When we got home after the party, my daughter opened all of her presents, and she'd recieved some lovely things. However, above childs mum obviously thought that present buying was beneath her. She'd wrapped up a mini box of raisins, part of a pack of used colouring pens (IIRC, there were 12 out of the original 20) and a half used colouring book. It looked like she'd opened her daughters bedroom door, and grabbed the first things that came to hand from the floor! They were beautifully wrapped, mind you, with ribbon and bows and all sorts.

    Yes, you sure did!!!! :D
I have a breakdown every xmas over buying presents for the wife..
    I dread it months before...
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

Some of these are making me laugh!!

I once received a bottle of cheapy wine with the tacky label 'old tart' emblazoned on the bottle from dh's nan!..I don't drink wine and if I did,i would not drink 'old tart'!

Other beauts include giving birth to my daughter, who weighed 8lb 15 oz,and being given 2 TINY 'newborn' cardigans from the inlaws that were actually 99p each from boyes....annoyed is an understatement.given that they bought sil a travel system,it kinda takes the biscuit!

Hubby was given a pair of fake leather 'puma' sandles for xmas-again from my inlaws.they are the sort that onslow from keeping up appearances would wear.

I think we should take the hint....

Priceless. I have come across some pretentious parents but nothing quite as bad as that.

Wetting myself at some of the stories - but an epilator clogged with MIL's pubes? Blooaarrgghh!! :rotfl:

For Xmas my aunt/uncle bought me and my sister a plastic, naked, doll from the market. This was a 50p doll, without any clothes. As we had no other dolls, we had no doll clothes.

ha, ha yes. It was a toiletry set, so also had some perfume (eau de cologne) in it and was a brand people had heard of -though I can't remember which one. Old fashioned looking, maybe blue and gold  I suspect they bought it for the fragrance rather than the very odd deodorant. I have more than enough perfumes so wasn't interested in it.

I admit buying my wife a ironing board for xmas....So i deserved the gnome i suppose..

You're lucky all you got was the gnome. My wife would have wrapped it round my head and inserted the ironing board for good measure! :rotfl:
