Did you get your sewing room LizD?

Yes, I did! Haven't really got it how I want, but all my stuff is up there at least. I've been using the existing shelving/desk to work on but I really need a cutting table and some proper storage. Being out of work til January put paid to my grand plans!

I should have some spare cash after Easter, so it's off to Ikea for a table and B&Q for wood to make units.

To buy it costs $15 including postage.

This link came with my knitting daily email. When I have my new house - when we sell this one - lol - I hope to have a space for my sewing and my jewellery bench. I try not to think about it as it all seems so out of control ........ eeeeeeekkkkkk

I've now got a sewing room. Moved 6 months ago and part of the "would like" for the new place was somewhere I could sew and do other stuff without having to pack it away each time. I know I am luckier than alot of people to be able to have this.

My cutting and work table is made from a laminate headboard for a double bed from IKEA that I bought for £5 in the bargin section. My Dad (bless him!) made the legs for it. This meant it was the right height for me as I didn't want to be bending too low when cutting out.
My storage shelves are from IKEA too. These are carcasses from the kitchen section. I find these better as the shelves tend to be deeper (and if I remember cheaper?) than a bookcase.

Willow girl - what a fantastic idea, to use the kitchen cupboard carcasses.

Did you use the single or double cupboards?

I love the idea of all these sewing rooms - very OS - and very clever. What a great place to keep the ironing. Sad as I am I would have to have a tele for background. I love BBC7 as well.

I have a sewing room, it is kitted out well with desk, chair, rocking chair. Only problem is I don't know how to sew! I usually sit in the rocking chair staring at the machine and then leave the room.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: I know the feeling. Being only 5ft 1 and a bit and always finding shopping for jeans/trousers a nightmare, my hubby bought me a sewing machine 2 years ago in the hope I'd run up something myself. Well.....it's been used for curtains and I ONCE bought a pattern and made a dress (say made it......it's sewn but far from perfect :p ) and that's it. The machine is in the wardrobe and every time I see it I think "yeah I''ll have another go" but I don't cos I'm useless!

I used the tall larder style cupboard. Will try and post a pic for you to see.
I just found the space better than a normal bookcase.

  • Hi everyone, I'm trying to carve out some space for a sewing room. Everyone else in the house seems to have their own space. OH has a purpose built office at attached to the garage, kids have own rooms. We have a spare room in the attic which is nice but a bit cut off and we use it for guests so may be issues there. Currently sewing in our conservatory but hate looking at the mess and feel have to be tidy all the time plus no starage. I'm looking at using a small lobby area which we just use for dumping coats and stuff. I've worked out I can get an IKEA trestle desk (love the glass topped one - just need some cash) and shelves or cabinet in. I think Virginnia Woolf was right you need your own space in which to be creative!!
Doing a boring job but thinking of the money!!
