Anyone got a sewing room?

Does anyone have a sewing room or area? We're moving to a bigger house (when we find one) and hopefully I'll be able to have semi-permanent area for my sewing.
Any tips for kitting it out? Does anyone have photos to share?

Mum and I have a sewing room in our house.
We have a laminate floor to keep it tidy and bought a trolley style table, Aneboda wardrobe and drawers from the ex-display area at IKEA. We also picked up a bookcase from a local secondhand shop, as we had so many craft books, etc.
We use the simple cardboard drawer-style boxes within the wardrobe to hold materials and accessories.
The room has a sink so its useful for washing up craft materials or filling the iron, etc.
We have the ironing board set up in there (it also serves as the sewing room) and a hanging rail.
We don't really do as much sewing as we used to - lack of time really. However, I did make some curtains last weekend and the room is great to have, but its a real luxury! Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

My mum has a sewing room. It contains the ironing board, a set of built-in shelves (I think 6 of them, probably 1ft deep and 3 ft long) for storing patterns, buttons etc and current projects. The top shelf is where she keeps empty jam jars for jam making! There's a chest of drawers for storing fabric and wool and a small table and chair for the sewing machine.
It has a large window, a ceiling light and an anglepoise lamp.
On the walls are lots of pictures painted by my sis and I when we at primary school.0 -
I have half a room for my sewing but it isn't properly kitted out so basically is just my machines and some plastic stacker boxes with fabric in. More a 'how not to have your sewing room' really!0

I'm with Mariel :rotfl: I also have half a sewing room which is completely swamped in fabric and trimmings, under there somewhere is a long desk which holds my sewing machine and overlocker. I have overhead shelves for patterns, more fabric, craft stuff, and shelves under the desk for yet more stashing. I also have a set of drawers on wheels (from Homebase) which store haberdashery, elastics, sewing machine feet etc etc. I also have a small CD/radio unit on my desk to keep me sane.
And no, definitely NO photos! Far too embarrassing!!
I would love a dedicated room which was big enough for the ironing board and a full length mirror as well, but I keep telling myself that running up and downstairs to press my pattern pieces etc keeps me fit :rotfl:0 -
I have the box room, as it is only 9' by 6' and my sons aren't remotely interested in a 2' 6" bed which is all that would fit in there. I have a length of contiboard supported on a chest of drawers and a cupboard, shelves everywhere that I can possibly get them on the wall and a cupboard over the door the width of the room. (And absolutely piles and piles of odds and ends - so no pictures from here either for the same reason as the previous poster).
This is a terrific book for ideas for sewing spaces that you could never imagine.

I dream of a sewing room! And I thought I was getting one too - I only have a 2 bed house, but DD1 has moved out to a house of her own, and DD2 was at uni and getting a place with her b/f - but the finances are not quite there yet, so my dream has been put on hold! I could do my card making up there too, and have all the ironing up there out of the way.........get rind of the double bed and get a futon from Ikea for guests to save space.......hmmmmmm!
Thanks for the tip about the book Addiscomber - one for my birthday present list I think!:j Almost 2 stones gone! :j

This was a bit spooky to read - I was sure you had to be one of my siblings as it sounded so familiar - but none of them live in London, so I guess our mums are just very similar!Total Debt 13th Sept 2006 (exc student loan): £6240.06

I had a small sewing room built in our huge loft and although not yet quite finished, it is shaping up very nicely. I put carpet tiles on the floor for comfort and insulation, had a strip light fitted, several sockets and a small window installed in the gable end for maximum daylight.
If money for actual furniture is tight, you could do as we did and keep a look out for someone either throwing away or selling cheaply an old kitchen. We bought for what was really almost pennies a range of 14 year old solid oak cabinets, did a bit of manipulation and adaptation, and for very little cash, have a completely fitted storage space, specially geared to what I need to store or work on. Open shelves catch the dust and as a person who'd rather stitch than do housework, closed doors help with that particular problem!0 -
If my teens ever leave home I plan to use the spare bedroom as an art studio rather than a sewing room! If I was still sewing I would want a large table for pattern cutting, lots of drawers for fabric storage, and good lighting!0
