Ebay got to the size they are today not by advertising, but by using their profits to buy-up smaller rivals, thus increasing their customer base.

I started-out on FS Auctions, this was Ebay's first purchase. That added 2.2 million UK customers to Ebays' database overnight, and doubled their UK customer base overnight. Since then, the big bad 'E' has purchased many rivals in many countries, and in the process, added new features aquired with each purchase, such as 'list by distance - nearest first'.

Ebid on the other hand, is growing by reccomendation rather than aquisition. This is a much slower growth-rate model, but is ultimately the most stable.

What a bizarre understanding you have of business. How did Ebay make their profits to acquire these other businesses?

Ask a random member member of the public to name two auction sites, they will struggle after naming Ebay. Ebid can have a nice business from word of mouth, they will never be at the same level of Ebay by going that way though.

I'm sure that for every 1000 disgruntled Ebay customers there is 1 disgruntled Ebid customer as that seems to be the ratio of sales from one to the other:rolleyes:

Tout Ebid all you like, and if (which I doubt) they ever get to the level where I could use them successfully I will.

Ebid is a UK company, but has been concentrating on growing it's US operations with TV ads, and billboard advertising.

Ebay usually runs its UK tv ads after it has been on Watchdog or similar.

To be honest, I'd rather see no ads, and fvf's of 3% max.

There is a much better alternative to Paypal, 'Alertpay' is highly reccommended by PCPro in their ' Ebay guide 2010'.

BTW, Unlike ebid, if you post on Ebay's forums daring to suggest a lowering of fees, or allowing alternatives to Paypal, you soon find your post removed.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

I like how you never let facts get in the way of your opinion;)

You never did say how you got on reporting Ebay to the Competition Commissioner
If Ebay continue with their plans to only allow Paypal as their online intergrated payment system, then I for one will be complaining to the Competition Commissioner on the grounds that is is in full breach of the competitions act.

Every week approx. 1,000 people switch from Ebay to Ebid. Why?, because you can integrate several different payment systems.

    I have accounts on both.

You were earlier saying how fantastic and secure google checkout was. Have you changed your mind now?

TBH, the last 6 months have been hectic on the family front, so I really haven't had time to put together a fully-researched paper to submit to the C.C.
This may be something for the future, but only if time allows.

  • I find that Ebay fees are quite high compared to Ebid but Ebay is far far better in all respects than Ebid. Try and sell something on Ebid, you'll struggle. Why do you think they offer the " no fees for life for £49.99"?
answer - Because it is unbelievably bad if you are a seller and difficult to find bidding auctions if you are a buyer (it's usually only BUY NOW. In 6 months I have sold one item on Ebid and over 600 on Ebay.
Don't be fooled into thinking it's a decent alternative. The majority of the buying public don't trust it.

Moral of the story- You get what you pay for with Ebid.

    The original post was 2005..........

Last post was over 2 years ago.... And how many people have heard of ebid?

    Says it all.
Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...

  • I'll second everything being said here - things simply don't sell on eBid. I try selling an identical item on eBay and it sells. The link to Google Shopping doesn't seem to make any difference to this.
