Groundhog Texts

miss_independent wrote: »Understand the concept of Groundhog texts lol! My self-titled "best friend" has never called me to actually speak to me but she texts me once a week to say "U ok hun?", I usually reply with a bit about how I am and say I hope partner and kids and her are well, to which I get, "We r gud ta. Hope ur ok.", never a comment on what I've said. If I call her it goes straight to voicemail. We havent met up in months but apparently I am still her best friend?! I think she sees the once a week "U ok hun?X" text as keeping the relationship going. She is obsessed with facebook, which I don't do, and very rarely calls anyone or meets them in real life, its all "U ok hun?" texts and, the same on facebook. Eg, I text her to ask if she had heard anything about a friend who had just got out of hospital and she said, "I sent her a message saying, "U ok hun?" but I havent heard anything, no hun. U ok? X" Or occasionally I'll get a text saying, "U ok hun? I'm fuming! U heard from Josie? I've txt her 3 times asking if she ok and not heard back once. Think she ignoring me. Not on. X"
I feel strongly that alot of people are losing their social skills due to FB and texting. I prefer phonecalls, face to face meetings and even Skype to texts etc. I'd rather have a relationship with my friends in person than with their phones. Luckily I have friends who mainly do things the same way as me but I hate seeing people glued to their phone when on a date or out with their children. I think its so sad.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry! I have a couple of friends who do this too. I agree that FB and texting are ruining social and communication skills - and spelling, grammar and punctuation too.
"U ok hun?" U ok hun?"
:rotfl:
No wonder she doesn't get many replies if that's all she ever says and she doesn't even acknowledge what you say in return!Life is a gift... and I intend to make the most of mine :A

OP - I agree with everyone else, your new phone contract is the perfect excuse not to be able to text as muh as you did before.
If your friend's children are grown up, perhaps you could suggest meeting face to face more often? She may or may not say yes. As you say, she is very 'wrapped up' in her family, but maybe as time goes on and/or they move out, she'll become more sociable.
And you're not heartless at all
Good luck xxLife is a gift... and I intend to make the most of mine :A

I know! After I text back things in the past about my Nana having died and me having scary health problems which were worrying me and all I got was, "Chin up, hun. We are gud ta. Hope u ok. X" I just gave up!
Now when she texts, "U ok hun?", I text back, "I'm ok, hun. U ok?" and we've been doing that for six months with the obligatory, "i'm ok hun. Must meet up soon" thrown in once a month. When I text back, "Ok when are you free? X y and z are good for me. X", I get a two week silence followed by a "U ok hun?X" text and we are back to square one.
:rotfl:
She gets really upset when I don't text back but tbh I don't see the point of keeping it going. I don't see what either of us are getting out of the friendship anymore. But when I leave it, I get a - " U ignoring me hun? text. :cool:0 -
I would just be honest and say that I had reduced my tariff on phone and therefore don't get as many texts in the package.
You don't need to mention that reciprocating her long epic ramblings are now a thing of the past
I don't think that you are being mean, you just don't need to know to her life step by step in mundane detail!0 -
lol, this thread is cracking me up hun, u ok? I have friends like that too.
OP, I would reply to your pal saying something about giving up texting as much as it takes over your life and getting a smaller capacity contract to ensure you stick with it. Good luckIf you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -

You could just be a little sarcastic and she might take the hint...or not!
....flipping heck that was almost long enough to be a New York Times best selling book!
See what her response to that is ;-)0 -

Or you could turn round and say:-
"WHY DO YOU WRITE A NOVEL EVERY TIME YOU BANG OUT A TEXT MESSAGE? AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FO' THAT"
I've got that woman's face in my mind now :rotfl:
I HATE texting. I can't do it on a touch screen phone.
If someone kept texting me, I'd have to ring them, have the convo on the phone and keep it at that.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
Lol - I'm so glad it's not just me.
She used to have an old phone that let her send mammoth texts; texts that came through on my phone as MMSs!! Vast beasties.
When she got her new phone she went nuts rattling out all these massive epic tales - course her new phone and tarrif sent them as MMSs and she got charged accordingly - something in the region of about £60!!
'Course I (stupidly) thought this would curtail the texts but now she just batters out the tale over 4 or 5 SMSs.
I used to laugh at people who said 'mobiles were an invasion of your privacy' but now I see the sense in that statement.
I'd have to agree Id rather take a few hours out and enjoy a natter face to face.Don't try to keep up with the Joneses - Drag them down to your level - it's cheaper .
