Thankyou. Those pencil cases sound good.

He is improving really well at school since his op, and is enjoying it more now which is awesome. Tutor starts in 2weeks, even more awesome!!

The tutor started tonight, and we were right to be concerned. She is brilliant though and can see the potential in him, as we have.

We all have homework and I think OH will benefit from a refresher lesson (puts TA hat on) in number bonds, adverbial sentence openers and decimal places!!!

Fingers crossed he progresses in leaps and bounds.

THANKYOU all so much for your help, support and advice. Ver much appreciated.

So much of our role as parents is to listen for the spark, and to help the child realise it is there. Times tables certainly don't resonate with many of our children. For that matter our whole education system has been continually criticised as an imagination destroying memory test designed to enhance linear thinking while squashing creativity.

Your boy has some particular point of skill. He is going to be more attuned at something. Wait, wait, wait, and when you see that spark, start coaxing it. If you can do this, he will be better off than all the other kids that got straight A's but find themselves bedazzled in the adult world.

His times tables WILL come, as they do for everyone. But many children are starved of their true calling by our machine-like educaiton system.

Thankyou for taking time to reply.

It would seem he is a bit of a clever little dude and is currently doing 19 times tables for division as I type!! He just does not do well in a classroom environment. I have applied, and been unsuccessful, to 2 schools for September for him and DD, so we will just have to go on the waiting list and keep up with the tutor.

I actually work in schools and think the curriculum works well for some but like anything not for 100% of children.

  • Rather than giving your time to other children why don't you consider homeschooling him. You already have the skills and home school kids do so much better than there schooled counterparts.

This is something I have looked into many times, but I don't feel I am clever enough to home school. I would have to have a better understanding of the methods of teaching, and whilst I would love to spend the time 1:2:1 with him and have seen the benefits of a tutor, like I say I don't feel able.

I can work with a group in school, but that is under teachers direction. If I !!!!!! this up, I am screwing up my sons future. I have a massive amount of respect for mums that home teach.

    Update...

We are basically back to square one! DS is doing really well and has made massive progress with his tutor, however, being back at school hasn't gone like we hoped.

The teacher seems to have expectations of him (which in all fairness he has lived up to for the first month), and is looking out for him to make mistakes. She is then coming down on him like a ton of bricks. The poor lad doesn't seem to have any confidence or fight left in him.

The handwriting has improved hugely, and his tutor has confirmed that he has no other issues, just not being pushed hard enough.

We are in the process of trying to move schools for him but were told there were no spaces in the local schools for both children when we applies in August. We will now go on the waiting list.

    Bummer eh!?!?

  • Get yourself a book called Reading Reflex by Carmen McGuiness.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Reading-Reflex-Foolproof-Method-Teaching/dp/0140280383

Follow the steps in that. You can order it from a library for free to see how you get on, then if you want it buy it.
