Net migration down nearly 100,000 over the year

Good news indeed.

A significant fall in net migration. A lot of this is made up of students. Would this be because they now have to pay more? (I'm not sure how fee's worked for overseas students before now).

Student visa applications are down 46%.

Apparently there is a "massive drop" of those coming from Poland.

Overall gross numbers have also declined by 80,000. Down from 586,000 to 500,000. Meanwhile, the numbers leaving the country increased slightly.

Good news, and it's good to see that the current government is bringing immigration under control. Will take some time, but the result so far look good.

AIUI EU students get free Uni Fees typically.

Non EU students historically get fleeced, they are a great "export", we need more of them (apparently).

The eastern Europeans that were allowed here have probably already come, if they wanted to, by now.

I very much doubt they have got it under control just that the tide has receded for now. Perhaps a more realise that the streets aren't paved with gold and for the marginal net gain better opportunities exist elsewhere.

As education is one of the major foreign currency earners for the UK this is good news in what way?

As an EFL/ESOL teacher this does nothing for my job prospects. The problem of bogus schools and students would be easily solved by specific targetting. One of the simplest ways would be to examine all of those schools who offer laughable pay to their teachers...

The overall net immigration fall is the good news.

Was just giving the key facts on the student visas. Though the fall is not made up purely of student visas.

This is terrible news. AIUI education is a big earner for the UK

Partly it reflects weakness in other economies but if you keep telling your customers they aren't welcome then perhaps they'll take the hint.

Education is Australia's second biggest export earner after primary products. We'll happily take your customers.

    Indeed it is.

Immensely depressing that some people celebrate such an awful thing for the economy.

Still, there remains hope that this is mostly a statistical blip.....
Sarah Mulley, an associate director at the Institute for Public Policy Research, said: “The Government's progress towards its target of reducing net migration to less than 100,000 by 2015 is still in large part being driven by falling numbers of international students.

"This decline in international student numbers comes at considerable economic cost to the UK at a time when we can ill afford it.

“In any case, falling student numbers will not help the Government meet its target in the medium term.

“Because most students stay in the UK only for a short time, reduced immigration now will mean reduced emigration in the future, which by 2015 could partially reverse the falls in net migration we are seeing now.”

    Build more houses.

Which only requires more lending to happen, as there are plenty of approved plots waiting.

Yep, the student thing is a travesty, the 'seen to be doing something' lot realised the only way this could be acheived was by reducing the number of students ariving thus improving the statistics in the short term manner described by Generali and Hamish at real short term cost to the economy through reduced foreign earnings and long term cost with weaker more expensive universities for UK students as their foreign fee base shrinks an dlower academic standards and major long term losses for 'brand uk' as there is no longer a pool of students who have studied here who might be interested in holidaying here, buyng british products or investing here in future, all driven by an attempt to meet the concerns of small minded 'nasty' people who see all foreigners as being unpleasant/evil/dirty/not welcome.
    I think....

    Sickening, really.
