I have two children in full time school and one who is half day at nursery until this september

I'm not totally sympathetic as I'm a mum who worked from home when the children were small, to ensure I brought in a decent income/pulled my weight financially, without impacting too much on my children's well-being.

However, that doesn't help your current situation which sounds really worrying! Could you ask for a review of your tax credit award? It used to be possible to have it reviewed on request.

Other than that, do you have anything you can sell or any credit cards you could use, even look for temp work in local shops and so on?

I was planning to look for a position in childcare where the hours are school time and term time

That sounds sensible but you are limiting yourself if you only apply for one particular job. Perhaps consider other work around school hours as well so you are not making things harder on yourself.

As for the benefits, other than what's already been suggested, possible ESA or any insurance policies your husband may have which can pay out there is not much else that can help with your private rent. How much do you need to make?

  • Yes I agree but even if I get the position applied for and start work on 3rd June, how would that solve my issues with meeting the rent on the 15th? And unfortunately I am not in a position where I can walk into a job that pays £1k+ a month and then demand money up front to solve my current situation.
My thread was aimed at trying to find advice on ways I could deal with the rent issue for June and thus enable my husband to have his still-broken collarbone surgically fixed!

The only thing we own that would raise some cash would be our car, but alas we would still be short

As Nannytone has already said, if your OH's Sick Pay has already run out then he can claim Employment Support Allowance (he will need fit notes from his doctor). He will probably get contribution based ESA with an income based 'top up'. You would be entitled to the maximum local housing allowance relevant to your family make up (check on your local council site) You would also be entitled to full council tax support (less the percentage your council has put in place)

Until these claims can be processed you will need to notify your landlord and let him/her know the situation. Until you are 2 months in arrears then no action can be taken. Hopefully, the LL will be reasonable and allow you to pay the arrears when the HB is backdated.

You have your tax credits so you can buy food. If you have any other creditors/bills to pay then let them know the situation. Most are helpful but like to be informed.

Your husband can claim I.S on the grounds of his SSP if awarded this would give you entitlement to HB and CTB or whatever they are called now.. This should help a bit.

I hope his operation goes well.

Working around school hours is one thing but finding someone to care for the children in the holidays for an affordable amount is another.

OP, how about approaching the bank and getting a small, temporary overdraft, just to cover you for the coming rent?

Bar work, night-shifts in local care homes (usually crying out for staff)? Even if it didn't help immediately it would be something you could tell your landlord or people you borrow money from... 'I'm working at X and can pay you back in 2 months time.'

Clearly OP doesn't want any comments other than how they can get money right this moment.

Option A- Speak to your LL, explain you are having trouble and come to an arrangement.

Option B- Get a loan from family/ friends

Option C- Sell stuff to make quick money

Option D- Credit card/ overdraft - this is very bad advice if you are already in debt, but you may not have an option.
