It is very important 160 to talk to older members of your family as they may well have vital information that can help start you off.  You could also look to join your local family history centre or the one where you think your family originated from.  In my local one, when you join you list a number of names you are looking to search or link to.  This is then published in their journal which can result in lots of other people contacting you with hopefully more information.

I checked out the webfamily.org site above.  It lists my father and a number of other members of this family name (my maiden name was quite rare).  I notice that they have all been listed as having died since around the mid 1990s.  I am wondering whether this site is building up its records from registers of death.

Freebmd is very useful but it hasn't got all the indexes listed yet. So you should try and use that first. Failing that you can register with https://www.1837online.com to search the indexes, but you do have to pay to view these pages. Also try registering with Genesreconnected which is part of Friends Re-united this has proved very useful for me.

Unfortunately for me I am searching my maternal grandmother's side of the family with difficulty - the surname is 'Smith'. I didn't really get into this until after my mother died last year when it was too late to find out information, hence my suggestion to speak to family first.

https://www.1837online.com. That's the one I was trying to think of thanks Corrina.

I did have it in my favourites but when we upgraded the computer it disappeared. I can have another look though now.

there is a free site for ellis island too.

i found 9 of my relatives there. (we have an unusual surname)
the surname helps a lot, i have been as far back as the 1400s and found an obvious relative. there are a few different spellings possible for my surname though so i am trying to narrow down possibles.

I've just posted this in the "Anything Else" board and then realised it's the wrong place (not too sure this is the right place either!). I'm a bit brain dead today!!

Anyway, does anyone know what documents can be viewed in the family history centre?

    Thanks
    Angela.
