I know you can get copies from your local registry offices straight away but apparently at the Family Records Centre it takes 4 days0 -
Also try
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp.
It is alot of information from some of the census'. I found this site really useful.
If it is more information about past family members like their occupation that you want it is the census' information you need.0 -
I don't know how it works in london but here in devon you can use the archives in the local library to look up things like that.
It's about 50p an hour!!Watch out people. You don't know what lurks around the corner for you![/SIZE]0 -

My hubby really into this so have just asked, he says the best ones he's found are
https://www.familysearch.org
&
if any members of family died during WW1 or 2
https://www.cwgc.org
Also there is at least one census on the internet 1901 and there is possibly another one might be 1881 but would need to check

It depends on what you already know and how far back that information goes.
Try some of these:
http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.jsp - the 1901 census. I think you can search for free but in order to look at the records properly you have to pay.
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com This is free!!
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp This is free also and there is a fair amount of information taken from some of the old census'
There is another one but I don't as yet have the link for it but for a fee you can actually look at the old census' on-line. The website is something to do with 1831 but I can't remember off the top of my head. When I find it I shall post the link
I hope that will help get you started. If you need any more help, let me know. It is frustrating researching a family tree but when you find an ancestor it's worth it!!! It's not as easy as the BBC would like us to believe either ;D

Sally,
I have problems with that site as well. They have some of our family on but I can't get any details on them. I did email the site months ago but never got a reply.
