  • Hi

Wanting to do some research for my mother-in-law who is Swiss but has lived in the UK for 50 years. She doesn't know if she has any living relatives and does not know much about her predecessors.

Have tried the Mormon's free search site but nothing doing. Checked with Ancestry.co.uk and they offer an international package but at £155 for a year I want to be sure that it does have lots of records to check. Has anyone used it? Or is Ancestry.co.uk good for UK only research?

    Thanks x

Try your local library some of the computers have access to ancestry for free. You will need to check with the library whether it is world access or UK only. Hope this helps.

Ancestry is American. They have plenty of American records, but you might want to email them and ask what Swiss records they hold, before you sign up.
  • Thanks Catfish50

Good idea - will do that!

I've just had a look at the Ancestry card catalogue (I have the International subscription) and there's very little Swiss stuff on there. 112 items but no birth/marriage/death records (which is the first thing you'd need) just scraps of bits re military service (mainly for the French) a few emigration records (1910-1953, in German) and a few individual family histories. Really not worth £155.

Ancestry often offer free trials, so could be worth looking for one of those and having an explore - there is a very remote chance that one of the handful of family histories could be your M-i- L's. Just be sure that you go for Ancestry.com and cancel before the free trial is up.

Good Luck. I'm afraid you're going to need it!
  • Thanks greyfox for the useful info. Did a quick search on internet but seemed to either be an option of going to a local library in Switzerland or paying someone to do your research. Will keep looking! :(

Have you looked at SwissGen http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/gener-e.htm ?

Not a subscription site but has some useful info and several links which may be worth exploring.

Also, have you looked at this http://switzerland.worldvitalrecords.com/ ?

It's another American site but there may be something relevant - and you should be able to cancel the sub after a month. (I haven't explored T&Cs, so look before you leap!)

The easiest way you can get a copy of a marriage certificate is to get one from the General Records Office. It will cost about £10 and you will need the reference number which can be got from either ancestry or free bmd. No certificates are available to view on line.
    Hope this helps. :)

Like "Candjsmum" stated Ancestry do not have the actual certificates but other info can be found out on Ancestry or other sites, sometimes for free!
What is it you actually want to know?
