A money saving tip perhaps? Two people share the cost of the same subscription? i.e you both know the login username and password. One sends half payment to the other who then signs up and pays. When paid useage period expires, person who has paid, changes password.

Hi there

I've just started researching family tree too (after various questions from 6yro DS about family) and am using ancestry.co.uk. It's pretty addictive! One night we suddenly realised it was 11.30pm - we'd had no dinner and nothing to drink! We were given a bunch of BMD certificates and were so busy putting in the info and then looking at the hints that we got completely carried away.

I will be looking for help and tips as I'm fairly new to this so this is great!

Good Luck!

I am just embarking on researching my family tree. Which is the best site to subscribe to? I know i will have to pay to find any information but want to make the right choice. Do the pay as you go credits transfer from one to the other?

I've seen this recommended on another thread on here but I'll repeat it in case you missed it.
Family Tree Forum - www.familytreeforum.com - is a free site and although you don't need to register it is probably best that you do as you can see more as a registered member.

FTF have put together a reference library known as The Wiki - can be accessed from the tab on the blue navigation bar - contains thousands of links to external sites which might help in your research. You can navigate from the main page of the wiki or by entering something in the Search box. Links are kept up to date and members submit new ones when they find something of interest.

Also has a great Research forum with a Qs & As section, so if you need some help in starting out or help with a brick wall, you're sure to find some good advice.

How much money would it cost to pay someone to find your family up to the year 1800?

Thank you

I recently started tracing my family history, and joined a very useful forum where other members offer very good and friendly, free advice.

Some of them also run a "Generations Game" whereby you give them basic information on a couple of family members, and they research and put together your family tree, at no cost, although of course you need to verify info they give you with your own copies of bmd certificates, if you wish. They did my tree a while ago and i ended up with over 1200 people!

I think at the minute they are possibly booked up till October, but if you are prepared to wait a while for you info, its very useful

It depends on what you are looking for, whether you want physical documents to keep, the nature of your tree (adoption involved, or from outside UK) and whether you can start the tree to the 1900s.

Many people work on an hourly or daily rate, there are ways to get some info free, but this takes more time. Also it is not something that can be found instantly. For example, at 1800 my son has a possible 500+ direct ancestors, not including their families, after 3 years, I have managed to find around 200 direct ancestors and over 1500 related family members.

If you would like me to have a quick look (it will take a couple of hours), pm me or email adrianmse@just-contact.me.uk with as much info as you can about relatives living at the turn of the century. I do not wish to know birtdates or full names of people living, ID Fraud is too prevalent, so don't give such details to people you do not know.

PM or email me and I will have a look. You can give me a 'donation' after that if you wish. It helps to know names, estimates of dates and places of birth marriage and death, places lived etc.

Here are my ancestors so far;
